Plug n play is cool but if you like to build, i have used a film canister to the head assembly on a flashlight as well as completely scratching one using various bits of construction paper, tubing and such.

film canister to the head assembly on a flashlight
+1 on that...I used a pill bottle and the head and refector of a small flash light with varios E-Z lights...works perfect.

I made my own. Made my light controller as well. That's turned into more of my interest in scale than any other aspect. If a part is not scale enough or components do not perform right then I use it as an excuse to play in the shop.
