What would be really interesting is some cost/benefit analysis.

Say costs(initial+esc related repairs)/usable hours of 1,000 100amp units over a 12 month period.

Start collecting!

Statistics isn't the only data. In reliability analysis, we like to know more about risk than probability of failure statistics. At least, with my lame grasp of stats, I want to know the failure modes and their consequences. Consequences x probability = risk. CC's product has worked well for me, until I opted to ship it to them for a checkout. I didn't bank on a mix up at Customer Service. They're good people, and good people still make mistakes. I believe product availability can also be a failure mode. Especially, if it was preceded by a failure mode which resulted in crash damage. Waiting for parts doesn't add value to anyones' equation. Being unavailable because it's out of stock when I am shopping for something, or being unavailable because it's held up at the vendor shop are both problems. Heli no fly without ESC or BEC. I too would like to get my own data...not on probability of component failure...but first hand performance measurements from my stick inputs to a Kontronic ESC! I am sure it would be pleasing.

Hey, cool! That makes sense. I haven't studied risk assessment yet. Lots of accounting, econ, stats, physics, etc though. Sounds interesting! You'd have to amortize the useful life of all the components involved to calculate it accurately. Actually that sounds like lots of work.

I'd like a report on Monday.

If they don't have the right replacement then they'll send you one of equal value...but not the same. Ask my Ice Lite 75 how I know (I sent them an ICE 75 for repair).

High Voltage just works better

Hmmm, fact check? No offense but that's not exactly how it works. In reality wherever demand exists, supply will follow. Demand exists for both Kontronik and Castle.
I agree to an extent.
But...how much you wanna bet that for every three CC's sold to every one Kon,Kon's profit is still higher

I literally never use the word literally right.

I was able to speak to Jenny today at CC Repairs. After three weeks and no word on my ESC and BEC, I have been pretty apprehensive. Sure enough, they scrapped them out because they lost track of my return. I created the service orders, and shipped them USPS to CC. I emailed them the tracking number. I don't think they ever identified mine with the service numbers I submitted. Today, they promised to replace them, but have BEC Pro's backordered, and didn't have a lead time estimate, but guessed at least two weeks. So, after the Tx throttle calibration, governor tuning, autorotation bailout calibration tuning, I am left to start over. I guess at least they are standing behind it, and it didn't cost me the consequences of a destroyed heli to get to this point. Not too thrilled nonetheless. I'd like to think I'd get a better value from Kontronic. Hey, I could save a couple of ounces and lose the separate BEC! Then sell both CC devices. They are decent folks, but have allowed these issues to stop my lipo flying for the short remainder of my Michigan flying season. Fortunately, I have 7 gallons of CY30 and two 55 nitros left in tip top condition!

I think the reason why castle esc`s are so popular is directly due to runryder hype, they did not even have to pay for runryder advertiseing, people just started claiming they were the best esc`s and for some reason it snowballed.

Also Align releasing there first 600 size electric heli with a 75 amp esc that was too small for the application ended up smokeing up peoples helis, this gave Castle a huge boost of all!, all of a sudden everyone starts claiming there castle 85hv is "bulletproof" and Align esc`s are rubbish, when in fact it had nothing to do with the quality of the Align esc, it was simply too small and could not take the amps.

Now its got so ridiculous people are ditching perfectly good brand new esc`s and replaceing them with CC`s simply due to the bullcrap they read on these forums.

Maybe this topic is a sign people are finally starting to wake to the fact that a Castle esc is no better or no worse than any other esc on the market, and by saying that Im not suggesting you put a 100 amp Hobbyking super simple brand $30 esc in your expensive bird, but IMO there are actually very good HV esc`s out there that are just as reliable as, if not more reliable than CC, Align included.

And as far as there minimum repair charge is concerned, thats horse crap, its cheaper to buy a new esc elsewhere, instead of waiting 3 months to finally get some old second hand esc in the mail thats likely to have already been used god knows how many times in someone elses heli.

Another thing they do IMO is quite delibrately make the esc setup into a complicated science, I think this is a ploy so that when the esc does not work you assume that its because your not smart enough to set it up correctly, they dont even tell you in the instructions that you need to calibrate the endpoints of your TX to make the esc work, the most basic of things you must know in order to get the esc to work is written no where in the manual, you either have search runryder or contact CC to find out, last I heard CC has dealt with this issue now, all you have to do is do a search on Utube and somewhere there is a video explaining how to set the endpoints..

I want to calibrate my throttle, set soft start, medium or hard start, heli mode or plane mode, the correct timeing for my motor and either low, medium or high voltage cut off and then fly my heli or plane, I dont want to sit in front of a computer trying to figure out which settings to use, and scrolling through web forums trying to work out how to get my esc working, and thats the way it is with CC esc`s.

I wouldn't claim popularity on hype more so on price if anything. However one thing that all of us learn in this hobby you truly get what you pay for. Pay now or pay later BUT you will pay!!

I totally agree, you get what you pay for!

Kontronik....i'd rather pay up front for its BEST quality.

Shop for cheaper priced ESC, you WILL pay later! Or, at least the next guy whom may buy your used low priced ESC.

Kontronik is not perfect but it is the best if you want the best. Don't cut short on your ESC with the low price $hit, pay up front and go German!

I was shocked to learn that Castle has their own in house production line. All automated with fairly modern SMT machines etc. But I do wonder if a contract manufacturer would actually do a better job of quality control.

One comment on the failure statistics. Another important facet is user error. I bet a good percentage of the failures are caused by poor installation, previous crashes causing hidden damage, poor soldering, mis-gearing, or undersizing for the application. It would be extremely difficult to root cause all failures and decide if it was a mfg defect or not.

$400 hurt bad, real bad. But it didn't hurt as bad as watching $2500 catch on fire. They didn't earn the name Castle Cremations for nothing.

Yeah over done it a bit, but Ive had bad luck with em, and I cant ever remember seing a post on here like this one, usually its CC fanboys trumpeting on about how "bulletproof" CC esc`s are, and posting up stupid graphs of useless telemetry that dont mean a damn thing.

I had one in a 6s rex 600, just stopped responding on the bench trying to set it up, sent it in to cc and months later I got one back that looked like it had already had 100 flights on it, it lasted 2 minutes into its first flight and had to auto in, then the same as the first, from memory all it would do is constantly flash.

I just bought an Align 100 amp, if its anything 6s or below I trust Align over anything else, if it needs to be HV over 6s I use a Turnigy Sentilon, apart from kontronic I think Align are the best speed controllers on the market.
you get what you pay for!
I think this is how CC operates they make there products very expensive so people will assume therefore they must be high quality.
