Just replace it with the scorpion then hopefuly it should last longer, and scorpion is cheaper, Dont know how many flights but I flew the stock motor most days at least 2 - 3 times, in about 4 - 8 weeks it was noisy, but I kept flying it for months with no loss of power, it just got noisier and noisier until I decided enough was enough.

You can have dozens upon dozens of major crashes and only have to replace blades, spindle and maybe tailboom, so basicly the price of a set of blades to fix.

Then you can have one minor little bingle that did not even seem all that bad and lose virtualy everything, as soon as you have to replace a cracked frame and broken landing gear + all the usuals, it doesent take much to add up.

The reason why I bring this up is I have crashed so many helis in the past 5 - 7 years or so its ridiculous and usually it costs about $100 - $200 with new blades and broken parts, the first time I crashed my 500 it was a complete write off, all that was left was the boom block and a few odds and ends like the battery tray, I think I just got unlucky.

Whats stranger still is the apart from one link popped off the main grip, the entire head was completely intact, I dont even think the spindle was bent.

Man, I'm still on the original motor. I always wonder when it'll die but she still pumps out some decent power. I've been lubing the bearings with triflow every now and then, maybe that helps. I agree, this is the most cost effective heli I own. It's been crashed hard about 6 or 7 times and only broke the frames once. The Trex500 will always have a spot in my hanger.

I agree, if I ever buy another heli it will be another 500, I screwed up an inverted funnel and it went in tail first (didnt even seem that hard to be honest), and broke every part of the heli apart from the head assembly, only one of the blades was broken.

At the time I just seemed like a normal crash like any other, maybe a bent spindle and a new set of blades e.t.c, but when I got home and started adding up the cost it ended up only 50 bucks short of a new kit with a new esc and motor included.

I ended up replaceing everything with HK clone parts, but only ended up flying it a few times, started flying planes and havent realy been interested in flying helis for a while now, maybe one day again if I get bored of planes, but cant see that happening any time soon.

Its just interesting to pop by the Trex forum every once in a while to see whats going on, not much seems to have changed in the year or so Ive been not following the heli scene apart from the 550 being released.

My stock 500 motor lasted at least 250 - 300 flights of basic flying before it locked up while flying during a cold weather session.

The resulting crash let the magic blue smoke out of the motor. I have a Scorpion now and it flies great.

Aside from the motor, the stock frame outlasted any flying I did. Crash performance was pretty normal. I only lost one set of frames after a really nasty crash.

This is a great heli in it's stock form. You do not need any upgrades. The only point of concern may be the motor, but I would not get too wrapped up in it.

The 500L motor has loads of power but bearings go, for me after about 150-200 flights. The ESC has been excellent so far but I will be putting in a Scorpion 3026-1400 on 15T and feel I would be pushing my luck on the stock ESC. Some claim good results but the math does not add up.
If I were to do it all over again I would keep the stock motor and esc until it the motor goes. Then maintenance/ replacement.

The 500 has about the best power to weight ratio and is a keeper.

I had one of the first T-Rex 500 in Canada and I put 1075 flights on it. Just sold it 2 months ago and the guy I sold it to is still flying it. I had to change the Align ESC after 328 flights, when with a CC ICE 75, and early on I also put a Scorpion motor in it. When I bought it, it only came with ESC and motor, used Hitec servos.

I finally had a tailbelt let go. I lost count on how many flights it had. It was in a big full bore loop and she started to piro out of control inverted. I managed to get her skids down but had to hit throttle hold and had a hard landing. Parts count was limited to new skids and pipes, spindle and tailblades. Geez, this is one tough heli. Gotta love it!
