I was going to amend my previous post but rather clarify in less words what I said.

If you are just starting AMA or FAI, your current gyro will do just fine. However, once you have some miles under your belt and become competitive, the Futaba gyro will make a difference. Just Going from my old gyro to a GY601 and a new s9296 was eye opening. The tail on my Freya (5:1) felt unbelievably crisp and the rate of piro was clock ward. Again is not about holding power as the Spartans, and the CYs have plenty, is the feel for minute control that you gain in precision hovering and aerobatics.
I am now upgrading to GY520s and BLS251, and some day, the angels will deliver a GY701. I can almost hear the choir...

I also would like to clarify slightly. Ben, I wasn't suggesting you or anyone else posting to this thread were allowing official Futaba support to influence your recommendation.

For those that don't know, I have gotten as much or more helicopter help from Dr. Ben and other Futaba fliers on products NOT distributed by Great Planes as I have GP products.

The fact I pay for my own toys and speak as an unreimbursed representative does NOT mean that others, and Dr. Ben in particular, do not give unbiased opinions of the products they fly.

Cheers,

Bill

What amount of gain are you guys using for hover and flight on the 611 and a Futaba radio, typically the 14mz?

Servo makes a BIG difference. If you use a BLS251, we often run gain in the 85-100% range in hover and 50-60% range for the aeros, mileage varying a little from model to model and set up to set up. Yes, these are 611 settings and no you won't cook the servo if the model runs smoothly.
