Aaron... funny you had the same problem, and pair it with more advanced maneuvers. The oddity doesn't worry me with my usual sporty flippy stuf but moving into travelling flips and rainbows and although I know a light touch is needed, just starting out on that stuff and an 80-flight noob so still a lot of learning to go and need to know if mistakes are 'me or the heli'.

And I NEVER heard of anyone having a problem with a Spartan other than setup issues. The 780... not so much. Wags aplenty on the 'other' forum, as you say.

Damn it's an expensive obsession. The upgrades... they never end...

lol ya funny! So much cushioning the freaking thing looks like it has its own futon.

Grabbed a new servo horn and the ball's now a few mm further out... waiting for the Apocalypse to end outside so I can go test it.

okay, new tail blades then new gyro it is. Tried increasing mechanical gain, after a lot of tweaking same response so MG not a goer - interesting experience though and I'm glad I did it so I know what I'm doing with MG next time. Thanks for the tip. I noticed my tail blades have shorn a bit too much grass and are a bit worn so i'll get some KBDDs (their paddles are AWESOME, btw) as a first-line response and a Spartan as the nuclear reboot option.

Thanks for all the help guys - I know it's not the setup as she's smooth as silk, all the way to mechanical binding point both sides on the tail and I got the gain to 70 with no wags so vibes aren't an issue. Here's to stable tails and the dumb thumbs who love them.

Yep -I set up the tail with 0 per cent gain... doesn't get much more rate than that lol... servo horn at 90 degrees, dead centre zero pitch tail blades...
NO, you want the servo at 90 when the tailblades are pitched just enough to hold the tail in a hover (not centered on the slider). This is why you adjust the linkage while hovering in rate mode. This will also get you consistent piros in both directions.

+1 Swoop

adjust the linkage so the servo is neutral but the tail blades have hover pitch in them. This is approx 1" of space between folded tips but is fine tuned via flight test.

@ Swoop... ah. That's the kind of reply that makes me glad I've found this resource. I'll get into that.

And Rick... I did. Found none describing why a HH gyro would not snap back to an original heading, irrespective of momentary deficiencies in holding power. Rotormonkey really helped explain that to me both here and via PM which was super-nice of him and now I also know an added requirement to help me get consistent piros and set up a tail in rate correctly, both of which will do a lot to enhance my enjoyment of the hobby.

agree with swoop.. the tail should stay put in a stable hover when you turn the gyro to rate mode.. +1 for the gy520 although I believe you can get the Align unit to work OK

It's also possible you're just running too much collective with too little headspeed, and no gyro on earth will help with that. Do you know what headspeed your running? How much collective?

If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

Sansone... It's been an interesting thread for me and I've learnt a lot. Heli nuts are awesome. It'll be fixed by tomorrow.

And I like planks just like you... looking forward to an EDF Hornet once work picks up. Skill level mismatches aside, nothing's quite so pretty as the silhouette of a fixed-wing (except a logo, maybe).

Rotormonkey - running between 2700 and 3000 according to a headspeed calculator (no tach as yet) and collective is 12 degrees with 8 degrees of cyclic. I might try taming down pitch in the swash mix and see if that helps. got a whole day tomorrow to really get it right so full-speed ahead (and a correct setup in rate...).

I don't think so. Better get a new calculator and a tach.

I'll attack a tach as soon as finances allow...

Just did HS again using this: http://heli.dacsa.net/calculatorv2/Default.aspx and it says usual HS ought to be 2744 with my 40C Align. Not sure where I got 3000 from. Maybe I put in an incorrect perameter in another calculation.

PROBLEM SOLVED
SOLVED: I got some Curtis Youngblood gyro tape and KBDD tail blades (and the paddles: middle hole = spastic cyclic... so happy with both KBDD products), then reduced mechanical gain (8mm hole) and bumped up electronic gain. Set up correctly for rate mode, reset rudder endpoints and suddenly all is rosy. So thanks for your input. I think it was a combination of a few one-percenter problems that combined to present a headscratcher of a result.

Happy flyer now... those paddles! Heli feels like a hummingbird now. totally recommend middle hole.

Cheers guys! Really. You helped me a whole bunch.
