Why is IRCHA attendance up? Probably the same reason movie attendance was up in the great depression. It provides some distraction and relief from the day to day realities of life.

IMHO it would go up more if they had it during a cooler month. As a born and bred Hoosier I can tell you August sucks. Yet most of the air shows around here are in in August. Go figure. Right now we're in the heat wave season. Heat indexes are over 100 and so muggy you sweat just thinking about going outside. Make it in a cooler month and I'll go.

how many of those pilots were not sponsored?

i wonder how many actual consumers show up... not sponsored pilots, not reps, not vendors, not staff - or not all the people who get discounts and/or are paid to be there.

Yeah, I don't get why it is done on the worst month of the year, with the worst flying conditions. Do it earlier or later in the year when there is cooler, better temps and I might be in.

I have to agree about the weather. I think that it got up to 98 degrees Saturday afternoon. I was truly miserable there. I personally think that September would be much be much better. The only thing about September is that all of the kids will be back in school. How about June instead?

But you have lots of people that arent attending this year such as ron lund, and us here at indyhelis. The economy is affecting alot of us... IRCHA would be really bulging at the seams if we could all attend without financial worries.
We saw that Kerry guy this morning on the flightline with an Indy Apache just this morning turning in our golf cart.. Ron Lund stated he couldn't go because he had a crucial employee out.. not because of the economy..

Hey and here's one for you wingtip.. you guys aren't the only ones with that 1/7th Blue Thunder from the Netherlands.. We saw a guy from Texas at the hotel that had one of them framed up and almost ready to fly in raw fiberglass.. and get this, it had BOTH turbine and electric mechs in it.. He had a little tiny JetCat P-20 in the pod that didn't turn the blades it was just for effect! They real power system was electric, 15S I think he said.. He did tell me he ordered the kit overseas and I think it's his scale project for next year cause he was being real secretive about it.. He wouldn't let me take a picture of it.. I think he brought it there to fit a Cine-Scale tail in it cause Starwood had a booth this year.. They had a 14HP turbine the size of a Folger's coffee can! I didn't see mechs for it though..

I don't think the vendors would agree that IRCHA is an anonomly. Sure people are attending but they are not spending $$.

IRCHA has been this week every year except for 2001 when it was in September at the end of the F3C World championships which was in Muncie. It was not very well attended due to two main factors.
#1 Already mentioned here, kids back in school, no vacation time, tough time of year to travel for this type of event.
#2 This was the week after 9/11 (which happened during the World Championships). Although commercial flying was back on by the time the event started, attendance was still very low.

there was a group that used to go to ircha from the indianapolis area.

one of the guys had a gerry curl mullet and called himself 'the player'.

he hung with a guy that worked at a hobby shop that ended up having a gender change operation. may be a different group. doubt those guys are still around.

lol well it started out as me and kerry and mark fadely as the indyboyz...but it grew to include several people. but i know the other people you are talking about and they are still around but the original crew dont get to go to all the funflys together as a group like we used to... we used to have a tail blade from a jet ranger painted in red white and blue and with all our names on it.. we dont take it to funflys much as its just extra crap we have to pack... i'll dig up a photo when i get home fromwork and post...

the economy is in the tank, national unemployment rate at 9.5%, real estate market down 20-25%+, forclosures in metro markets up 75% for the year, 131,000 jobs lost last month, car sales down 20-25% from highs 2-3 years ago, stock market a fluctuating mess, loans hard to get, people are trying to save more, pay off credit debt, consumer spending has decreased......and yet, IRCHA attendence in 2010 is encroaching on it's all time high.

Explain.
Simple.....

Things aren't as bad as some would lead you to believe.....

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....
