I don't know if people are aware of this or not. Evidently there is a class action settlement against many lawn mower companies for misrepresenting the horse power ratings. If you bought a lawn mower between Jan 1 1994 and April 10 2010 you may be eligible to get up to $75 for a riding mower or up to $35 for a walk behind mower. For more details you can check out the link below.

Curious as to who had enough time on their hands to check the horsepower output of their lawn mower engine.

Yup, its part of the latest lawyer trend. They go over products looking for any detail thay can exploit. Another variation is they look up patent numbers posted on products, if the patent has expired, they sue. Not alert them to the oversight, couldnt care less about a few digits on a lable no one ever gives a rats ass about, they sue because there will be digits on a check.

Lawyers are worse than theives, scammers, and people who talk during movies.

New legislation
Will now require all lawnmower shops to have a rolling road dynometer to check horsepower claims before the customer takes delivery,a range of tuned pipes will be used to get the mowers up to power.A spokesman for the Lawnmower federation said they as yet have no way of measuring flymow outputs because of the lack of a roller, this would require time consuming engine removal.Billme and Wally have been consulted on the flymow issue to see if cutting rotor speed decay and bogging of the motor on a set height of grass can somehow be used as a measurement to arrive at a horsepower figure.Bill said this should be easy as it is in effect a fixed pitch helicopter

I bought a new one this year and noticed that NONE are advertised with HP ratings anymore. They only advertise the torque of the engine.

The weird part is torque ratings are largely meaningless to the vast majority of people.

Stupidity can be cured. Ignorance is for life!
