Thanks for the feedback on the battery packs, guys! Today, during my lunch break, I'm going to hover my heli out in the warehouse here which will also be my intitial test of the battery packs. I'd like to do it outdoors, but I just don't think the weather is going to clear up much by noon. But I could be wrong... I'll keep my eye on the sky.

Oh, and yes, I'll have my training gear on.

First hover!
I'm happy to report that my first hover went just fine. Wow, what a rush it is to finally "fly" my 500!! I didn't do much other than hover it for the first battery pack, but on the second one I moved around a little bit. A little side to side and forward and back, but only a few feet in each direction, gently. I could tell almost immediately that the many hours on the simualtor were well spent!!

Looking forward to more practice at the field tomorrow!! Woohoo!!

Thanks, moonbird!
Although I was a bit nervous about flying today, it felt really good to finally get my Trex 500 in the air at the field with the Eagles for the first time. I want to give a big THANK YOU to everyone for all the flying tips and words of encouragement as well as the compliments on my hovering!

And I know it's not just about me... I've only been with the Eagles a short time, but I really enjoy seeing the mutual support, encouragement, and all around good times shared between all members of the club. Eagles rule!

I didn't get a lot of photos today, but I'll try to post them sometime tomorrow. (Sunday)

Already looking forward to the next time!

Easter Flying
The Eagles did some Easter flying at Minor Park today. Check out the pictures. Check out Darren, he's doing an excellent job hovering. Great Job keep it up Darren. We got a Johnny-on-the-spot and everybody was happy to see that. No more woods. Happy Easter to All.

Good times!
I had a great time getting some more hover practice in again today. Still makes me nervous, but not as bad as yesterday. Haha!

Thanks for the pics, moonbird!

Nice pics! I don't recall my heli ever being stationary that flight and the pics are still sharp!

:)
Thanks, FlyinGLoctitE, glad you like them! I usually get a few clear ones to use, but I take 50-100 shots of any given heli in flight because I know that only about 10-15% of them are going to be usable. It's definitely tricky to keep up with a heli that's doing a lot of 3D, but I enjoy the challenge!

More hover practice
Although damp and cool outside, the rain stopped enough for me to run two more packs through my 500 at lunch time. I remember that Dennis (I think it was Dennis) suggested that I start learning to use idle-up mode while practicing, so I took a deep breath and flipped the switch today...

Wow, now that's freakin' spooky! I see you guys in idle-up all the time at the field, but there's something about being in control of it when it suddenly goes to the higher headspeed, especially on this 500 electric. The sound it makes is intimidating. (Somebody remind me to ask Roger to tach my headspeed next time we're at the field.) The butterflies in my gut intensified by an equal proportion, I think. LOL

I kept it in idle-up for a couple minutes, but then decided to turn it back off... I'll try it some more later.

For the guys who saw me moving the heli around in a box pattern yesterday, I did pretty much the same thing in the parking lot today, but at one point I wanted to try a little more altitude, so I took it up to about the same level as the top of a semi trailer... so I guess about 13-15 feet? I just held it in a stationary hover up there, but I felt pretty comfortable with it. (Don't worry, I'm still not doing more than I feel I'm ready for.)

For example, even though I was hovering with almost full right/left side in, a co-worker of mine who knows a little about RC helis said I should go ahead and fly nose-in, but I declined. "Not quite ready yet", I said.

Maybe tomorrow.

Hmm... something not right...
So, I went to practice my hovering again tonight and I noticed what seem to be like more vibration than usual on startup. I powered down and unplugged/replugged the battery pack and checked my servos, links, blades, etc. Didn't see anything out of shape. Started back up and the vibration didn't appear the second time. *shrug*

But... I can definitely see that my blades are not tracking right. The tips are clearly separated, although not by a huge amount. It still flies fairly smooth but I don't really want to run it too much like that for vibration concerns. I measured my linkages going up to the blade grips with a brand new set of digital calipers and everything is equal so I guess I'll have to put some colored tape on the blades and adjust visually.

That should be a pain in the ass.

Also, when trying to do a stationary hover the heli wants to lean forward and to the right now and I have to put constant cyclic the opposite way to keep it from drifting, but it didn't do that before today. (That's with no wind, BTW.) Is that caused by the blades not tracking right?

I gotta go play pool tonight so I can't work on it again until tomorrow.

Crap...
I did some searching online while between pool games and I think I know what the problem might be. I discovered that I didn't put the feathering shaft sleeve in the head. I completely missed it in the instructions. Gah! Noob!

Unfortunately, I used that sleeve for something else (I thought it was just part of the packaging, I guess) and it's unusable for the feathering shaft so I'll have to get another one. (Unless someone's got a spare they don't need??) I'll call Hobbytown and Hobby Haven tomorrow and see if they have them in stock.

Good deal...
Called Hobbytown USA... they have 2 sleeves in stock.

(I wasn't looking forward to driving all the way down to Overland Park for it.)

EDIT: Okay, so after doing some more reading, I'm finding out that the feathering shaft sleeve is not really required. Apparently it's designed to help stiffen the dampers which helps for 3D maneuvers, but basic flight should not be affected by the presence or absence of the sleeve.

Unless someone else here has another opinion?

Blade tracking could cause the problem
also to low of head speed
I dont know if it is belt drive but belt tention can cause vibration.
