Looked like a great day at the park. This fall sure has been nice. We've had some great days to fly.

Pete as usual you have some nice pictures. It's the pictures that show the involvement of the group that really make a club special. It's hard and takes time to put the pictures on Runryder, but it sure keeps the club active. Its always nice to look at Runryder and see the activity of the club. Even if someone can't or couldn't make it to the field, they can still look on Runryder and feel involved knowing their club was active and alive. No pictures makes for a cold and dark place, that shows no involvement. Pete has done a great job keeping us alive and vibrant with colorful pictures. Pictures of every member in the club all involved in what we love to do. R/C Helicopters.

Great job Pete!

Oppie, nice to here from you. I hope your surgery went well. We've been having some really nice weather to fly.

Jimmy had his new 700 at the field today, it looked very nice. He has ordered new batteries so couldn't fly. Pete took nice pictures as usual. Dennis brought the quad to the field. Even though it was windy we all had a great time.

It seemed to be tail shaking day. I don't know what's in the air but it needs to stop. It's nice to have steady tail.

** Off Topic Post Of The Week **
Well, it's sorta off topic... it's not about RC helis, but it is about helicopters... err, well, yeah. Actually, I wanted to share some video clips of a new full-size helicopter simulator for the PC called "Take On Helicopters". (Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the title, honestly.)

It's a simulation of non-military helicopter operations, like executive transport, police patrol, sightseeing tours, private security ops, etc. These videos are of the beta version, but the complete game will be released on the 27th. This is not neccessarily meant to encourage anyone here to buy this game, I just thought y'all might be interested in checking it out. I'm using a fairly high-end gaming PC with a joystick, rudder pedals, and a TrackIR system. (Controls the in-game camera view by tracking my head movements.)

Anyway, here are the clips. (It's actually a single video broken down into two parts, so watch part 1 first, then part 2.)

(They're not super hi-res, but they still look better in Full Screen mode.)

Thats cool.
It looks cool Styx. But it looks way too easy to fly to be realistic.
Or.. maybe its like the models ....when you are flyin YOU make it look easy. Like when you are doin the Pyro flips!

Hehe...
I dunno, I wouldn't say piro-flips are easy by any means.

The flight dynamics in Take On Helicopters is supposed to be fairly accurate, but I do have a lot of experience with other PC simulations that involve helicopters. In this sim, it's actually kinda tricky to hold a solid hover and good smooth landings require plenty of practice. I didn't record a landing because I'm not that good at it yet.

Speaking of accurate helicopter simulations on the PC, probably the most hard-core realistic sim available is DCS: Black Shark. It's a true-to-life simulation of the Kamov KA-50 Russian attack helicopter. (Shown here.)

Every system, from weapons and targeting systems, avionics, flight characteristics, radar, engine performance... you name it, is accurately modeled. Just to give you an idea, the company that makes it, Eagle Dynamics, also makes simulators for actual military flight combat training. (The KA-50 specs are declassified, which is how they were able to get so detailed with the PC simulation.)

Here's a video that shows only the startup procedure for the Black Shark. After I got my copy of the sim, it took me a couple days to memorize this startup routine. (I didn't record this video.) About 99% of the switches and instruments in the cockpit are just as accurately functional as they are in the real KA-50. This sim is not for the timid.

Here's a video with audio commentary that demonstrates some of the weapons and targeting systems of the KA-50. (Remember, this is a simulator for the PC.)

Crap, they disabled imbedding... just click the link in the video window...

I finally gave up on the sim until I can discipline myself to really learn all the systems properly. Learning to fly one of these bad boys and operate everything is tricky enough without bullets, missiles, and rockets being fired at you. The manual is over 500 pages, and the section on just the ABRIS moving map display is 131 pages. Crazy, huh?

Yes, throw that is right. From now on your my spell checker. That was your test and you found the miss spelled word.

I'm not against a side car. I kind of like the idea. The most important thing is it needs to be fast so I can blow through the snow drifts this winter. I'm also thinking it should be blue but I also like green. I guess I won't be able to be picky if I get one with a side cart. I wonder who makes the fastest moped with a side car? It would be nice to have tassels on the Handel bars something that would blow in the winter wind.

Hey Raptorman,
For the record, on that Take On Helicopters simulator that you said looked too easy to be realistic. Well, last night I tried a scenario where I had to carry a SWAT team to the rooftop of a building and hover above it long enough for them to rappel down via ropes from the helicopter. Of course, to further the challenge, the scenario involved 15-20 knot winds.

Let me tell ya, it was extremely difficult and required multiple attempts. (At one point, I got all out of shape and clipped my rotors against the side of the building, sending my helicopter plummeting to the street below.) Ouch.

I don't know how difficult it is to hover a real helicopter, but Take On Helicopters is not a simple arcade game by any means.

Now I want a bull.

I wonder if he would fit in the truck and how he would get along with a Chiwawa.

I'm worried the Chiwawa might scare the **** out of him and then I'd have a real mess to clean.
