To All Fellow Rotorheads,

I would love your opinion; there’s been an ongoing issue at our local field. The plane guys are always complaining about the heli pilots not being courteous and taking up the whole sky.
Well, I can assure you that it is far from true. We always take turns and ask if anyone is going up before we take flight. And if they wanted to, all they would have to do is ask and we would gladly ground our helis.
Furthermore, the person leading this charge is the president of the local club. Isn’t it his duty to promote a fun hobby? We are not violating any safety regulations. So, what is the problem? In fact this guy (from what others and I can see) has come to the field and has flow while under the influence of marijuana. That in itself is a safety violation. He will also distract a pilot while he’s in the air. He just doesn’t make it fun for us.
I ask you guys this, what can we do as heli pilots to stop this and I am actually wanting this person to get banned from our field. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks

uggg. This just sounds like a pain in the hiney. I personally would just vote with my feet and find a new club. If you had enough helicopter guys and enough energy you could start your own place. But like I said, its a real pain and I would just avoid confrontation and move on. I am of the belief that people dont change and you'll just end up beating your head against the wall and the hobby wont be better for it in the long run.

Members could try to vote him out of his position and vote someone that can do a good job. I'm pretty sure this will stir up some pretty good drama. Other choice is to leave.

I would like to ask do the heli guys fly planes as well as helis? I almost bet they don't and that inlies the problem. Most of the people around my areas don't 'like' the heli world and in my opinion think it is less an rc hobby than the planes. I myself fly planes and helis so I can be neutral here. It is a real pain that the ones who don't like the helis cause such an issue. Your real problem is him being the pres he can get rid of the heli guys with enough support. My first suggestion is get spectrum style radio, it amazes me what people will do... get me? There was a thread like this one sometime ago and the guy had a big junky plane and flew non stop while the helis were there and wasn't worried about if he hit a heli in flight which seemed to be the intention. The last thing that would be healthy for the club is fall out with these people, just try to ocupy airspace that the planes are not taking and as you are doing, land when they go up or fly pattern as they do, most clubs have a fly direction so go with the flow while they are there. Naaa, this doesn't solve the problem and the manner helis fly is not the problem it is just a prik throwing his dislikes around. A flying club is hard enough to come by anyway, try to make the best of it. I do not support the idea of splitting clubs into planes and helis since it is a radio control club, sometimes helis are better in their own club as I will agree with that but not if you can all get along and co exist. It is a shame everyone can't just get along and respect each other and just fly what ya bring. Anybody can fly planes but it takes a certain fella to fly a heli, maybe this guy has the 'little man's syndrome'.... ha ha. Good luck with the problem.

There is no such thing as up, it's all out...

It's a shame having a president under the influence of marijuana. On top of that I was there when he was flying his plane an we literally landed all our choppers so he can have the whole field. And his guy is a two face person . All he does is talk crap about everything. If you guys know an way how to get this guy banned fromthe field please help us show the way how to. Any input is much appreciated. I'm with u Rick.

If you have a problem with someone, grow some balls and take it up with the person that you have the problem with.

Here is the problem... This guy can be a real hothead... The last time we flew, we even made sure that if he took off with his plane ALL the heli guys stayed on the ground. And guess what? We heard that he was complaining that we didnt let the plane guys have a peaceful turn.

Now I ask you... instead of talking to us, he went and talked nonesense to someone else. Who has to grow balls? Him or us?

We have tried to make peace. But nothing seems to work. And to answer another persons' reply "Yes we also fly planes... But most of us prefer helis."

I am a member of this local club and I am thinking of saying something at one of the meetings but, I am only one of a handful of heli pilots in a room full of plane guys.

Next time I see this person, I will pull them aside and have a civilized chat and see what happens.

Thanks everyone.

IMO
This is a very common problem happening at most RC fields nation wide. The first thing needs to be done is a heli pilot needs to become a member of the board to speak on behalf of the heli club members. Heli pilots pay the same dues as the plank fliers and should be able to use the same airspace. The 1st problem maybe that when a heli take to the air there is only one heli flying(not fair) make sure 2-3 helis fly at the same time so everyone can have a chance to fly. Problem 2 make sure when a plank is flying no one flying helis may occupy the runway ( meaning 3d over the runway so a plane can land or 3ding in front of a plank flier this scares them ****less.
its a shame that some club members will bitch and wine about heli pilots just because....at the club were i am a member i just went thru the same process. May the 22 will be our second heli smackdown ever in the history 30 plus years at this club.Last year the heli funfly made more money than any event held in 2009. If your able to hold a funfly and promote it. This can go along way for leverage. There is alot i can tell you but tomuch to type. I will be glad to help you achieve your gold just pm me!

It's a universal heli and plane fliers problem. We have the same problem here where the expensive plankers thinks our helis are mere cheap nuisance.

Our flying fields are not designated hence human rule applies, although we try to 'keep in queue' but there are always those dickheads who thinks his rig is more expensive hence reserve the rights to go first.

You must fly at Irving and Cumberland? If so, your on public property and he does not own the field. The hot head over there also flies heli so I don't understand why he does what he does with new heli faces.

I'm just wondering how many flyers in your club ??

we have usually somewhere around 28 or 30 Members yearly in our club and we only have 2 local Heli Pilots (includes me) and sometimes a couple more Heli Guys come from over the state boarder,,
any-hoo the thing is (if you asked them) most of the Plank Guys here really don't care for Helis, but they know we have a "right" to fly so they are mature about it and say nothing,,

""Next time I see this person, I will pull them aside and have a civilized chat and see what happens""

maybe you could ask him what his real problem is with helis ??

Lets face it... a lot of people are in clubs just to provide a venue for thier bitching. You gotta get him voted out of office, and to do so you may have to run for office.

Clubs and club politics just SUCK.

Amazing how things work when you give anyone a title and a little authority.. I mean just take a look at any club, condo or home owners association, school PTA, small or local government, church organization. they seem to work out exactly the same..

I fly where I want, when I want, as close and a low as I want.

If what you say is true, and he is under the influence of an illegal substance, just call the law and have him arrested that next time he shows up high. If that doesn't qualify for having him removed as president, then maybe you should find another club.

Same ol' sh!t, different day. My local club has a designated heli area that is about 40 yards deep and mabe 100 long. But you are only allowed to hover, and it has to be 2.4. You can use other radios and fly the "runway" in a pattern IF there is no planes at all. I was only there a couple of months as it was not worth it for me.

We have the same rights as the plane guys... It is just a matter of mutual respect. We have to stand our ground and let them know that we have the same rights as them.

easy...just smoke more weed than he does.
But seriously, planks and helis are just not conducive to occupying the same field unless you "pattern fly" your heli, which most people don't do anymore. No easy solution unfortunately. Our field is a large open field with shelters and a large paved runway. Owned by the city, maintained by the club. We have a dedicated area perpindicular to the runway for helis. That being said, I never joined because I hate clubs, so I just flew there on days when I knew it would be pretty vacant.
Of course with the heli line being perp, puts our flight line directly lined up with a rising sun....

Plus one for getting on the board. The only real way to make a change is to be a part of it. One of the clubs I'm in has made the change and I'm glad I played my part in the change. I sat on the board for 4 years running, I was (and am again for my 5th year after taking a year off) the events coordinator. The first thing I did was to schedule a heli fly my first year, with the OK of the rest of the board. It's sponsored totally by me and I recoup with a measly $5 landing fee that covers lunch (a good one!) and flying. If I take in any more than I spend on food I donate it to the club. My heli fly is the only event to actually give back to the club, not every year but it has. I invite ANY pilots in the area to fly that have AMA. Then with that started, I worked on helis being a part of the club and ways to work out issues between plankers and helis. I had a slight advantage as I flew planks for 13 years or so ahead of the helis. It can be done! It just takes time and you have to stick with it. Our club now welcomes anyone that flies, are there still squabbles? Sure, but they've gotten fewer and fewer, and the club is the better for it.

If you skip me I can't play!
