I did a search on this topic, there are a few posts about it but none seem to come to a solid conclusion.

Working on my Freya tail I noticed the 9254 servo has a notchy feel to it when moved by the radio, smooth when the power is off and moved by hand. In reading some of the other posts some people suggested replacing the gears, some said have the pot replaced, some said to toss it and some said it was a normal characteristic of that servo.
I also have the same servo on my Shuttle so I checked that one, It also has the same feel, not smooth like the 9252's on the rest of the bird. So now I dont know If It is OK since both of mine are the same or if it sucks because both af mine are the same and they are both bad.

If you have a 9254 could you check to see if yours has that non smooth feel? I did not realize mine was like this until I actually felt it while it was moving with my finger on the servo horn. I also checked it with the tail linkage rod disconnected, it has the same non smooth feel.

Ditto. Mine's been going solid for two years, and it's like that. Makes a helluva racket when doing funnels, but otherwise it's fine.

If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

My 9256 is the same, scared me into grounding my Spectra G until I coud get another servo.
Has anyone sent their servo in for service and received a "No Defect Found" reply?

I have received my new 9256 but have not installed it yet. I'm really interested in the replys received here...

I suspose a better question to ask: What causes the notchy feeling if it's not a bearing or gear problem???

The 9256 on my 600N is notchy feeling right around center. Never had any issues with it. They seem to last forever.

Mine is like that too. On the bench it has a jerky movement. I have more than one that way too.

When I did the search before creating this topic there was someone that posted they sent a servo in for this problem and it was sent back with a message that the servo was fine. The poster still did not use it though, he did not trust it from what I could tell.

Now i'm curious.....has any one tried just plugging you servo into the RX by itself and not into the gyro? I think it might be the gyro input? My new ds420 does the same thing...sound like the little servo has gravel in it .....LOL

I have not tried that, Ive also thought about removint the top half of the servo, the gears, and try to run it with power just to eliminate the gears from the equasion. I will have to try that later, its too nice outside to sit in the basement.

I suspect it's a pretty safe bet that it's not the gyro causing it. We now have multiple confirmed cases of people seeing the same behavior. We can't all be running the same gyro.

I for one have seen the same behavior on both my spartan ds760 and a vbar. Papa sal says it does the same thing for him on a ds420.

Seems like it's jut the way this particular servo behaves. It's been going strong for 2 years now, and still seems to hold the tail just fine though, so I'm not worried about it.

If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

I too, am glad to see this thread; mine is right there w. you guys.

Really noticed it a week or so back, when I was finishing up getting
a heli back in the air. Moving it under power w. the stick, it gives
all kinds of 'notchy' racket through the tail/rod guides. Power off,
the tail assembly is totally smooth. ( and no, I have not tried it just straight from the Rx, either).

It IS going on 3yrs old though, and just keep looking at those BLS251s
......but am glad to see that maybe that is just characteristic
of these servos.

BTW, mine is running w. a 401 gyro.
