Hi Guys,

Been a while since I was last there but my daughter is visiting NY with her University in 12 days time.

She wants to take her cell phone with her but as we are in the UK, her charger is going to be useless. (230V v 110V)

She will be based around East 40th St and I was wondering how would she find a shop where she could buy a suitable charger for her Samsung phone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost all Cellphone WALL WART power supplies are universal, that way manufacture only have to make one for the whole world. They will take both voltages, just different plug, just need converter and it should work. Power Supply should have Input Voltage rating also.

Are you sure her cell phone will work in the USA. Years ago when I travelled to England and Europe my cell phone was incompatible with the European standard.
Maybe they have fixed that but check to be sure.

I have had a UK cell phone before, it worked in the states fine, but the signal just wasn't as strong as it would been for the U.S version phone. Something about how the phones are "tuned" to the cell towers..

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

And if it does work in the US, don't forget about roaming charges- you pay just for the ability to accept incoming calls by having your phone on whether you actually use it or not. She may be better off by not bringing it along at all.

What kind of phone does she have? Some phones will work overseas and some phones will not.

Thanks guys,

I'm pretty certain that her phone is a Tri-bander, as for roaming charges.. not too much of a problem as she is part Yorkshire (so it means that she is tighter than a ducks bum in water when it comes to spending money !)

She will mainly be using it for the camera facility and will probably only use the phone twice whilst she is there (one to let us know she has arrived safely and the other to let us know she is on her way back.)

I'll look at her charger to see if it is multivoltage.....

Is she aware she is charged just for having the phone on? You can't be penny pinching against something that you don't know is happening!

I've never had a charge for having one of my phones on when overseas. What do you mean by that? People don't get charged just for having a device powered on.

Its for the ability to accept incoming calls out of your regular service area- not just the ability to make calls but the ability to accept them as well. That's what roaming is.

It depends on the details of your plan and the relationship between your provider and the local provider, but the ability to accept incoming calls is not necessarily without extra cost. And as long as the providers are working together to keep you connected to the network and enable you to accept incoming calls, you might be charged for it. So it means that as long as your phone is pinging the cell tower you might be charged (which in most cases means the same thing as simply having your phone on).

you have to be USING the phone, ie, talking on it. Simply having it on will not cost a dime. If she answers in incoming call, well, then she's using it.

Cell phone chargers are universally 120-240 and 50-60 hz compatible. It's the plug type you need to overcome.

Stupidity can be cured. Ignorance is for life!

Digging around it seems that she has a quad band phone so that's not an issue... have looked at her charger and it covers 110 - 240 V so all is well.

Thanks for your help guys and on this happy note, I shall now close the thread.
