I am a 2010 ircha first timer this year. Reservations are made.
I keep hearing about the night life at ircha. What exactly goes on there. Seriously! What flight line? Site 3 or site 4??. I want to check it out too but I'm sure I'll need my sleep too. I have heard things like I won't get any sleep if I camp there!?! Will it be a problem?

I camped on the main IRCHA site(4)last year. Night life was interesting. Some flying, golf cart races (which I'm sure will be more limited this year with the golf cart rental company on site all week to watch things), the poker party (I was camped right across from this area and it wasn't bad at all). Most modeler's are somewhat respectable when it comes to night time. By 10:30 it was really pretty quiet. There was late night BS sessions going on in various groups around various campers but nothing that really got out of hand (I am a pretty light sleeper and I wasn't awakend by much at all). The best part that if you are an early riser, some of the best flying time is 6-7 AM. You are pretty much by yourself, there were never more than 3-4 other models in the air at that time. I would be willing to bet that at the main RV site (3), it is even quieter yet. It was a much better experience than I anticipated based on the stories that I had heard before (I am a lifetime IRCHA veteran, all the way back to Dayton which was #2 or #1 depending on who you talk to).

I've done camping at Site 4 two years & most previously Site 3.

Site 3 is by far my preference - much quieter, bit more room to spread-out.

As kcordell mentioned, folks are very respectful about making noise after dark - easy to sleep.
Might I suggest ear plugs if you're a light sleeper - the the sound of a nitro engine at 6AM is probably only something to be heard at IRCHA - and after a few too many cocktails the night before, its not always welcomed, but I roll over with a smile on my face and bury my head back into the pillow! This is LIVING.

As far as night flying, Site 4 & Site 3 are active every night - leaving the true entertainers to "WOW" us on Saturday - definitely worth staying around for.

You're welcome to come over to Site 3 and fly with us - pretty quiet last year and we had the entire runway(s) to ourselves.

Nice part about Site 3 - the actual flying area is about a 2-minute walk away from where folks are camped - so safety via "distance" is a bit more than site #4 - where campers are pretty close to the flight stations - unless you head towards the ends of the flight line @ Site 4 - and again you're all by your-lonesome.

checkout the aerial photo & keep in mind, takes about 4 minutes to travel between Site 4 to Site 3 via golf-cart - only 1000+ acres in use here!!!

P.S. If you want to troll around like a raccoon all night, I'm sure you can find someone to party with - but that is the exception - most of us know we fly like $h!t if we burn the candle at both ends!
Enjoy the time, be safe, respectful & discrete!!!

Thanks for the feedback. We will be at site 3 with a motorhome. I want to do some flying at site 4. I think that is where we all will want to set up our canopy tents. Like to be where the crowd is during the day. As for nightlife, I truly would like to check it out but I really am not a night person. I think if there is anybody out at 6am flying I'm gonna be right next to them flying too!. That is just my time of day. Surely don't want to tick anyone off though. Looks like Saturday night I'll be up a little later than normal.
I have heard that you don't get much flying in at Ircha. I kinda wanted to. My thinking leads me to want to stay at the quiet end of the site 4 flight line and if needed spend a little time at site 3 as well. thanks for all your info.

This can be true - but if you focus, you can fly a great deal. You have the right idea, get your tent/canopy setup early along Site #4, stake your claim and make friends with your neighbors!

Not much flying done at IRCHA, well I put in 22 flights last year. Yes started early morning 3 to 4 flight back to back, then 1 in the early after noon, after 45 minute waits, then 1 or 2 more at the end of the day 6 to 7 pm lots of flights stations opened. This leaves the day for seminars and noon time demos.
The real party is on Friday night, then Saturday night it's the IRCHA dinner and night flight comp.

Now that's what I'm talking about! I'd be happy with 22 flights at Ircha. I do want to roam around and see the sights, vendors, seminars and demos. Hopefully I can get a little of everything.

Like it's said, best time to get flights in is early (sunrise or slightly before) and late (after 8PM, Indiana doesn't get dark until almost 10PM). They only ones who don't get any flying in are the ones that don't show up on the main site until after 8AM and leave by 5 or so. Also, with the addtional land available and 2.4, you should be able to get it enough flying that you will want to take a little break once you get home after the week.

Thanks for the day light info, had no idea it was that light so late. This sounds like my kind of place to fly.

Last year I burned two gallons of fuel. I did not count them but on a 37 and a 50 that's about 10-15 flight.

I flew at site 3. Just hand carried my stuff from the camper to the runway and flew. Can't get any better. Flew in the morning and headed to site 4 for noon demo, seminar back to site 3 in the afternoon for more flight and when back at site 4 to enjoy the rest.

Used the shuttle to move between sites.

Do not forget to attend the pilot meeting in the morning at site 4 they are literally throwing away lots of t-shirt and other prizes.

I wanted to watch the auto contest but missed it.
Too much going on. I had to make choices.

It sounds busy with lots of heli fun. I love tee-shirts so I'll be there. I guess it may be easier to get flight time at site 3. Hmm. we'll be camping there. Can't wait....
