I have a modded back plate, but the sensor doesn't trigger consistently. I removed the sensor and tested(passing a metal object)and all is good.

I'm thinking the sensor area is too large, which could be why the sensor LED is on longer than expected?

How are other getting this to work.

sounds like you need to adjust the sensor out away from the back plate in till you get a single short sensor light when turning past the crank pin. give that a try and let us know... that was a problem i ran into.
