Check for binding in the tail assembly. Remove the rod from your tail servo and move it by hand. Should be silky smooth. If not, find out why, and fix it.

How about how your gyro is mounted. Did you use gyro tape, or just thin double sided tape from the hardware store?

Is your heli vibration free?

Did you set it up to fly in rate mode first? Or at least give it a couple degrees pitch at center to counter the torque of the main rotor?

If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

Check all your flight modes and your subtrim on the radio. All trim and subtrim *must* be at center or zero in all flight modes for the 401 because it "learns" what center every time it's turned on. You can't move the heli or the radio controls while it's initializing. The 401's led will blink fast during this time.

The 401 must be initialized in HH mode. When you turn on your heli you need to make sure that the gyro initializes properly. You can tell it's OK by looking at the red LED. If it's solid (not blinking) then it should be good to go.

Another KEY item in gyro setup is that the tail MUST BE MECHANICALLY TRIMMED PERFECTLY in normal mode. If you don't start there, you will always have problems.

why do people always say you cant have trim on a 401,you can.it says so in the manual, since it LEARNS every time you turn it on,where ever the trim is set it considers neutral, you just cant add trim after it has been initaialized in HH.if you add trim in RATE you can either re-boot the gyro or switch between rate and HH 3 times fast and it will re-learn

now granted having no trim or subtrim is the prefered method, but is not absolutely necessary, you can do it either way

yes, if you add trim then re-initialize the 401 in HH mode it will work but now your center signal is off so you'll end up giving more "signal" to spin one direction than the other lock to lock. Also every time I've seen someone use trim on the 401 they are chasing a different issue and don't know how to fix it. They end up with the trim all the way over because "it keeps drifting every time I go to fly".

401 = no trim, no sub-trim. Initialize in HH mode, check for minimal drift in normal mode, adjust mechanically then fly in HH mode.

This is just my opinion and experience setting up a few 401's. Other techniques work for others so do what works for you. It's all good
