Super Thanx Voo Doo
You gave me the lead I needed to obtain a photo of my dad at Leyte Gulf,
Oct 20 1944 as published in the Denver Post. Photo #67 : He was their sitting on the deck of a small LZ in his skivies, with a base ball hat on , having a smoke and I think their a few can's of Falstaff sitting their - the grin they have is just ridiculous. - Just to the right of the photo shown. Must be the second or third in a set of a series's.

We saw it once, in the front page new's print, in a frame artifact store in Denver and he would'nt pay the $300.00 for it in the store.

From what he told me MacAuther changed his wet pant's like 3 times to get the dry looking photo coming thru the water like you see it. It was staged. He absolutely detested the man as a show boater.

Now if I can find a way get to the archives -

My Dad
Was a member of the US Navel Armed Guard which was an all volunteer service of only 145000 men. Pretty much they were the step child of the USN assigned to around 6000 civilian merchant ship's - not real popular amoung the other sailors - considered them nuts, minimal arnament. Duty was simple - get it their - at any cost and any way you can and don't get caught. Most of the time with out convoy - . Think he went around the globe like 4 times - leaving from different ports and different vessels and had every campaign ribbon.

When he saw the hoopla over that series of photo's made public, he went absolutely blood red nut's - my mom couldn't shut him up for day's. He wanted to take the corn cob pipe you see clenched in his right hand and ram it home due to MacArthur error's.

That series of photo's is so close I can smell it and bring's tear to my eye's - my dad has either got to be behind him in the second photo or in the next one or two that follow.

It's pretty easy to recognize. It is the only crew " their sitting around" on the edge of a LZ completely out of uniform. Base ball hat's, bare chested, wearing skivvies, some un shaven, all smoking, a few in flip flop's, tan as coconuts and a few can's next to each other.

I remember asking how come, and mom just rolled her eye's and dad said they all new better than to ask. A few times he's wear his old hat and grown men would come up to him start crying on how the Guard saved them due to lack of ammo or supplies prior to the main forces getting their. Pretty crazy duty traveling at 4 knots in small vessels alone. His blue jacket manual, boat duty roster, and diary are scary stuff.

Best story is one he payed the locals - some where near "India" - at night to guard the perimeter of the vessel. Payed them with empty coke bottles. Evidently " Local guard's" sleep all day in the area in the sand and then disappeared at nite on the perimeter. He said they only wore Panti Loon's ??? These guy's then turned the coke bottles into gem stones to sale back to the service guy's. Payment was do on the amount of ear's they turned in on cord's

Thanx for the flood of emotions

To my Dad : Thanx Bud !
