this has the potential to be a mega disaster.

well head is 5000 feet deep with the rig now sitting on top of it.

no one can get down there to cap and good luck using an rc submersible with the rig sitting on the well head while it is blowing oil at high pressure.

current estimates are 200,000 barrels per day blowing out of the well into the ocean.

just in time for the summer driving season gas prices not to mention the damage to the gulf coast that is on it's way.

no one is acting like it is a big deal yet but it will be.

will make the exxon valdez spill look like a minor annoyance.

It will take three months to stop the release of oil. BP rented the platform but didn't carry catastrophic insurance on it.

Kinda Muffed It
Here you had a huge floating & ballasted rig surrounded by an ocean of water.

It's burning out of control with a faulty blow out / shut off device known from the beginning of the incidence.

Even though it's burning out of control it's not contaminating the area and it will still float. Big fire - you bet - but it's consuming the blow out.

Put the fire out, using massive volume's of water on top. Mean while it may have or " not" have damaged ballast tanks - fill them from the top with water putting out the fire . IT SINKS . Meanwhile ..........

Wonder what the sea floor sub - stata is made of ???
If it's lime or balsamic / wonder if they could pinch off the hole by collapsing the floor. Heck it's been a long time since we lit one off.
Aka - macka- ding - dong want's to come to the UN any way - how about a sub sea demo ??

Maybe the military can use a mini atomic bomb to collapse the floor under the ocean to bury the oil hole.

The same reason a lawyer charges you $350 a hour to add up your bill and send it to you. Because they can.

Eh... so you can fracture the formation even more and now instead of having crude oil to deal with you will have contaminated radioactive crude oil.

Actually the rig was a DPS or Dynamic Positioning System, which means the rig is not anchored. As a result it is very unlikely that the rig is actually sitting on top of the well, or the BOP (Blow out preventor). Try hitting a marble with another marble from 200 ft with winds blowing at 30 mph. Most likely the oil is coming out of the riser, not the top of the well or BOP.

Really... you know that it was faulty from the beginning? My gut feeling is that there was a pipe joint where the shear rams were and that stopped them from shearing. Now that the riser has collapsed and the drill pipe is a piece of spaghetti inside the BOP, they will not be able to close the upper or lower rams let alone shearing the pipe.

i heard on a news report that the the rig is resting on top of the well head which is spewing out oil under pressure.

i also understand they are using 10 r/c submersibles to try and cap it.

i don't see it possible to use that method to cap a head underwater spewing pressure. you would think once the submersible got near the pressure would blow it back away from the well head.

All this talk about "Blow Out Preventers" and "Dynamic Positioning" and "Plugging the well" and "Hitting Marble" and "Oil coming out of the riser" and "faulty blow out" and "pipe joint" and "shear rams" and "drill pipe turning to spaghetti inside the BOP"

You'd think that this guy is totally geared up to either produce a porn flick of epic proportions or man the booth at the Offshore Technology Conference or something. Go figure.

Let's go ahead and move this discussion on over to the Hot Girls Thread.

Na. It'll be awesome. You will be able to ride on a cruise liner from here to Cozumel that runs on crap that it sucks straight from over the side of the boat.

Hell, during the right time of the year you can burn down half of California by flicking a cigarette but out the window. Why should they get to be so special? I'll finally be able to flick my Bic down in Surfside and burn Fidel Castro out of his friggin outhouse.

Yeah... I had an epic day at the setup, and will have another one Saturday. Just gearing up my speeches for the Offshore Technology Conference. I predict I will loose my voice by Tuesday!!!

Heh.. the ROV's (submersibles) are not actually exposed to the well bore. There is a BOP sitting on top of the well head connector. The ROV's are trying to close the shear rams by plugging in a "stab" (kind of like those water hoses with quick disconnects) into the shear override so they can manually pump hydraulic fluid into the shear rams. On top of the BOP is a 360 degree swivel and connected to that is riser (think pipe within a pipe). There is 5000 feet of riser that has collapsed of which some will be cracked or completely broken apart. That is where the oil is leaking from. Now if the oil is leaking below the BOP near the well head connector, closing the shear rams will not stop the leak.

Correction, it will cost BP, Anadarko, Cameron and Haliburton a ton of money.
