i have a pred. gasser, and am replacing the enigne. the problem is i can't get the drive train to run smooth. if i pull the pull cord with the spark plug out it pulls nice and smooth. if i pull it again the main gear binds. i can then rotate the main gear and it frees up. i can spin the main gear and it is nice and smooth again. if i pull the starter cord it may turn nice and smooth then it hangs up. the fan and clutch have been dialed down to just a hair over a thousands out. i replace the bell housing, bearing and holder, starting shaft, pinion and pinion bearing adn housing. i have adjusted the gear meshing time after time, but no luck. i have had the enigne in and out of this machine i bet 30 times in the last day and a half. i just don't know what else to do or check. any thoughts

i ran into this problem this year when i was installing a new motor, on a nitro predator, not gasser though.

first problem was the prop nut came loose and the clutch jammed itself into the underside of the clutch bell.

the other problem was just simply alignment with the clutch.

when you install the motor, try loosening the bolts holding the clutch bearing blocks on the frame. so when you install the motor, the bell can better align itself to everything else and not jam up.

thanks for the reply
i have loosened the clutch bearing bolts numerous times. when i think i have it , it binds after several pulls or by turning the main gear. i have looked at it some much the last couple of days i think i am over looking the problem. so i am giving it a rest for a day or two.

Have you tried just running the engine and flying? Some of those liners were pretty close.. You may have a little run out on the linear..I had one that did that, and after a few runs it cleared up..

After reading it again, it sounds like you have a little run out in the liner itself

Doing good my friend

I'm sure you have a liner problem..Its probably out 3to.004 and when you turn the engine even with .0005, it might catch due to the tight tolerence..
You can send it back .. Century is suppose to check those. They can do it in Ca..
If you have a lathe with a boring bar, you can do it yourself to save time...Just take the high spot out..

^^^^

i was able to that once with just sand paper. I could tell were the high spots where because they were shiny from the clutch shoes rubbing on it. so i just sanded them down a bit.

otherwise i would have used a lathe....thats on the list of things to get...

I had the same problem and after 2 flights it was gone, However, I wish I had turned the liner in my lathe to increase the clearance. When starting from cold I have a bit of clutch drag. Disappears after warm up. I guess the clutch bell expands. Have many flights on it and the dang liner just isnt wearing. Any one have an idea of the proper clearance?

i have looked at the clutch lining. i can't really tell the high spots, due to the light color of the lining. i have been working on it for days and totally burned out. i have shelfed it. saturday i have to drive to seattle from w.va. so when i get back i will be ready to tackle it again.

i have heard that century had a problem with some of the pinions. some of the other fliers contacted century and they replaced them. i contacted century and they want proof of purchase. i have had the heli. for about 4.5 years, bought it used and they want proof of purchase. so guess no help from century. this is my last century helicopter. a couple of years ago. i had 2 of century's swash plates come apart in flight. again century said if i could provide proof of purchase they would replace. so they didn't help. i put a minature aircraft swash on my machine.

Name me a co that would replace those parts on a 4.5 used machine, and I will fly their stuff

If you had bought new, this would not be an issue now for you..You did say you bought a new clutch bell which i think the liner may not be true, if so, you can have that replaced... What pinion you need, I probably have a extra..

i replaced my clutch, lining, clutch bearing, pinion, pinion bearing and starter shaft. i threw the old away. i wish i hadn't now. the new items i guess are the problems. i don't have the receipts for those. i replaced the above items because they were very worn. i guess i didn't explan it very well.

If you bought the parts online, typically you can log into your customer account and reprint your order receipt. If you cannot, I am sure a simple call to who you bought the parts from could get you a copy of the receipt as well. If it was from a local shop, not sure if they would keep records of their cash and carry sales.

Either way, it is pretty customary to provide proof of purchase. It is expected in just about any type of retail transaction if you wish to get something replaced that might be defective.

i only use money orders for purchases. i really don't understand why one would have to prove proof of purchase. century is the distributor. they can see it is their part. all the parts come from century to begin with. i recently had a problem with an ipod. i had to send it back to apple. oh well it doesn't matter. i will just have to find another way around fixing the problem.

Bill,

i appreciate your help, and interest. century wanted me to dial indicate the end of the pinion gear. i did and it looks good. it looks like it is about 1 3/4 thousands out. i also dialed the top of the clutch just out side of the one way bearing. it is less then a thousands out. i have worked again all day on the machine. about 9 hours. still binding. i have loosened the frame, realined, and everything else i know. i am so discussed with it. i think i am just going to fly it. i have spend approx. 40 hrs in the binding prob. and just worn out with the problem.

kev.
