Hey guys,

I've got a used 450 V1.5 (430L 3550KV motor) that I'm going through before first flight. So far, so good until I pull the ESC for inspection. I'm guessing it's not the original BL-35G because it's connection wires are marked "CASTLE CREATIONS" There are no other identifying markings, however, so I have no idea which Castle ESC it is, other than "not a new one", so I have no set-up info to go with. It had two layers of different kinds of foam mount tape, so I'm guessing the previous owner had it installed in something else before this little 450...

I'm thinking a new ESC would be the prudent way to go. I'm searching through the forums now for info, but while I'm doing that, what would you do? Which current ESC's would you consider?

i really like my align 35 that came with my 450 pro as the spool up is really smooth with the soft start.

can you post a picture of the esc all cleaned off? maybe someone will be able to ID the esc and save you the money.

Who cares... its just money...

I use Castle Creations ESCs in all my electrics and love them. One of the super nice things about them is that most are software upgradable. If it's a Phoenix or ICE and not super old then you can get the Castle-Link and load it up with newer firmware. Also, if you don't know what it is, if the Castle Link recognizes it, it will tell you. If you can post a photo of the board, I can probably tell you what it is unless it's super old.

I know from experience that you can get by with a CC25 if you're not flying aggressively (I use one in a scale heli that I only do FF and basic aerobatics with), but the CC35 is really a better fit, especially if you want higher headspeed.

If you can't borrow one from somebody, it might be worth the $20 or so to buy the Castle-Link just to let you know what you've got. If it doesn't work, then probably the ESC is too old to be of use to you. If it does work, it might save you from having to buy a new ESC.

thanks guys I may have ID'ed it - if the pics on Ron Lund's ESC page are correct, it appears to be a Phoenix 35 - the circuit board layout and components match.

It's kinda grungy - I've worked a bit to get the old foam tape off, but I'm a bit concerned about damaging the shrink wrap - it's already damaged and has a hole worn in it over one of the circuit board components. I'll work on cleaning it up and snap a pic -

here's a couple of (crappy) pictures -

the back side of the ESC is covered the sticky side of some old foam tape - I'm not optimistic it's gonna come off, but I don't believe it's gonna have to.

I think I'll gonna go ahead with the set-up and treat it as a Phoenix 35, and if it doesn't behave as such at any point, it'll come out -

I'm 99% sure that's a phoenix 35. So, yea, treat it like that!

New on the RR. Been lurking a while. T-rex 450 stick banger!

if you get real ambitious you could buy a big piece of shrink tubing at radio shack and just re wrap the esc. on any of my esc's i cut out the shring wrap so the aluminum heatsink plate shows through.

Who cares... its just money...
