So I am finishing up my build on my 5oo 3g. I have run into a bit of an issue. My current battery charger can only charge up to a 4s pack. Now having my new heli almost finished I would love to start flying and tunning it ASAP. I would really rather not wait to put the funds together for a 6s pack AND a good battery charger ($350-$400)

SO my question is... How well will a 500 fly with a single 4s pack, will it have enough to at least hover around and some fwd flight, so that I could start dialing in the 3g setup?

Also what the opinion on running (2) 4s packs, I figure this would just be too heavy for this bird..

Hopefully I will have the cash for the new charger and 6s Hyperion early next month

A clubmate does run a Trex 500 on 4S , the same packs that he had for something else , but he used a motor with a higher Kv along with a pinion change . Be aware that you will be drawing more current to get the same power as you would on a 6S pack , so make sure that your esc , motor and batteries are upto the job .

If you still want to use a motor and esc intended for a 6 Cell setup ,
I would say it's not viable .

Yeah I think I will just wait and get what I want.. Patience pays in the end.. I might just buy a cheaper charge and pack.. Maybe I will go with a chinese turnigy pack which is half the price of the Hyperion.

I've got one of those Turnigy Accucell 8 chargers . I've only used it a few times so far , but it seems OK . It comes with quite a few different leads and it has a big display which is nice . On the down side , the input leads to the charger are very short .

There is supposedly soon to be a four output 4 x 100W Turnigy charger available , that might be handy .

That's actually a bit misleading . It may be able to charge at 5A , and it may be able to charge 6S , but it can't charge 6S at 5A - it's maximum output is 50W per channel . So , it's only going to be able to do about 2A on a 6S pack .

True it will do a 6s pack at about 2A but that would work perfect for the 2650 or 3000 mah packs because you can still charge then in about an hour or so.

+1 on the accucell 8. I have one and it does a pretty good job. Going strait 6s made a huge difference when I had my 500. 2x3s packs always seemed to have the power system run very hot, and one pack was more discharged than the other. 6s 2500-3000 is the way to go. And as for the 4x6s charger. 50w per output will leave you wanting more, so youre better off getting the accucell 8, and you will be able to charge those packs at 2c.

flyride:

charging one of those 2500-3000 packs at 2 amps, depending on the discharge, but lets say around 70% will take well over an hour. If he wants to be charging at the field where he flies, i know i would not want to wait for an hour to charge a pack. And in that case, there is two things he can do: buy a lot of batteries, or buy a few batteries, and a capable charger to charge them fast.

I had the poly4 and it was not able to charge at a high rate but it worked good as I could do 4 at a time and as a battery came out of the heli then I put it on the charger and just kept cycling them as they came out of the heli. At the 70% mark on a 2650 it is putting in 1855mah and at 2a charge rate it would be about an hour so if you cycle through them a battery could be commming off every 15 min or so. Sure there is always better and if you have larger packs than 3000 it would kinda suck but for the price it would work ok. Just charge 4 batterys before you go to the field and then after the first battery start the charge cycle and you can fly pretty consistantly all day. If you have the money get something better but for a budget this will do, and if you have 3s packs it will work even better. Even if you had one charger that could charge at 2c then you could only do 2 batterys in an hour anyway so you would still needto buy 2 chargers to get the similar results. The 4x100w unit would be awesome though. Just my opinion on an inexpensive setup that would work well but obviously not the best there is.

6S for best results with high C rating, or 5S at minimum. This heli likes headspeed and 4S is not going to cut it.

Here is a good thread for it, it's a bit old but you get the idea. The new 45C 6S 2650 TP or 35C 6S Hyperion batteries, are your best bet.

You need a good charger for this heli.
