I have been out of the hobby for about 3 years. I am slowly getting back in, and in the planning stages of a trex-450 v3 pro. I have an old great planes triton charger, and bulldog 15amp DC converter that I used to use to charge my old lipo's (before balancers were around). I know I am going to need to get a 3S lipo balancer, but is there a good charger I can use with my bulldog DC convertor? or am I better off getting one of the all in one units? Any recommendations would be appreciated.
thanks.

ive used many chargers a lot of them from hobby city... but i have a cellpro 10s right now and love it... if your were charging your 3s packs 15amps would be plenty... you could charge 2 of your 3s packs at the same time and balance them... through the balancing adapter so no need for a plug in... its like 170 new or around there but i would say its worth the investment because if you move up into a bigger heli it can do 2 5s packs or 1 10s pack so unless your flying 12s its plenty of charger... i use it for my 8s 600 and it works great keeps them all balanced well

and welcome back i got sucked back in over the december break lol...

you could always get a cheap 3s charger but the problem is if you get a bigger heli later you will need a bigger charger so why not save the money and get one now, plus you can charge 2 batteries at once to cut down on charging time

+1 on the CELLPRO 10S,had mine for about a year and a half and it absolutely kicks butt.its REALLY simple to use( for example its IMPOSSIBLE to mess up cell count) and charges SAFE and FAST.It tells you everything you need to know like Mah put in,IR ect ect..great charger

at a little over 2C I have my 6s 2500 packs fully balance charged in about 23-25 min

oh and as said, for 450 size packs,3s 2200mah or so,you charge 2 at a time at 2C and you can have 4 batts done in less than an hour

My vote is for an iCharger from David at Progressive RC. The charger is good, as is the customer support.

Charger selection should begin with your budget and your requirements (what you want to charge and how fast you want to charge it). Some of today's LiPos are capable of being charged at rates as high as 6C.

I'd recommend taking a look at Hyperion, FMA, and Thunder Power. All of which have recently announced or will be announcing new models that will be available in the coming months.

hyperion 615 duo 3.

you can grow into it. love mine. tells you everything, 2 charge/dicharge ports.

can go up to 2 6s at a time or 1 12 cell max.

last charger you would ever need. well worth the cost.

using mine with a chargery 20amp a20 power supply. using it now for about 6 months and couldn't be happier.

I'm happy with my Hyperion 0720i NET3. I have installed the latest firmware that was just released and the charge control software which just entered public beta.

While I really want the larger charger that I can grow into, I don't have the $250 cash right now. I am leaning towards the Hyperion 606i 6S 6amp charger for $79.95. It's a heck of a lot easier to get this past financing right now. I can always go back for the bigger one later. Any comment on that particular charger?

if the 606i is a 50W charger I would try to get one with more watts.just because a charger CAN do 6A does not mean it WILL because of Watts=VoltsxAmps.so if you are charging a 6s 2500mah battery the max you will be able to charge at is just a little over 2Amps.A less than 1C charge will take over an hour to complete.

if you are only going to charge 3s batts, then 50W should do fine for you,it all depends on your needs

I understand about money being tight. But your charger keeps your lipos healthy and performing at their peak.Dont try to skimp here, get the best one you can afford that fits your requirements. The Hyperion chargers are nice, just make sure you dont get one you'll outgrow fast,or doesn't have the features you need

Take a look at the Thunder Power TP-610C. It's an 80W charger so it's a bit more powerful than the Hyperion. You might be able find one used for $80-100. If your budget is tight be sure to figure in any necessary balance boards or adapters as well.

I'll have to chime in. ICHARGER! iy has the power to charger bigger packs faster if you move up to a bigger heli. Can't beat the price. The manufacturer puts out firmware updates. I have the 1010b+. I can charge my 4500 8s packs at almost 2c and it takes around 30 minutes.

+1 for Icharger from progressive. I was in your situation just about 6 months ago and I'm glad I went for the I charger. My brother has hyperion duo III and he likes my charger better. I charge a lot of batteries using parrallel charging. Lately I been charging at 300 watt; 2 6s batteries at 12 amps 3000 mah, done in about 20 minutes. I might have to buy another icharger, I will be building a 12s heli. I have used it to charge a lot of 3s for my 450 too. 3 3s battery charge at one cycle. I am waiting for a 600 watt charger to come out.

Yes it has charge for storage. It charges the lipo to 3.85 volts per cell for storage.
