[quote][size=small]British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the world's large economies were close to agreeing a global tax on banks to help prevent another financial crisis, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

The report said Brown played down expectations of a deal at the next Group of 20 meeting in June but that he wanted an accord struck at the G-20 summit in Seoul in November, along with capital rules to reinforce banks against a future crisis

Brown said the scene was set for a "global responsibility levy." He said Britain, France and Germany were now broadly agreed on the need for a levy and that he hoped the United States would come on board.

"Britain, France and Germany have talked about what we can do together. We are agreed on the need for a common basis," he said. "The relationship between banks and society has to change."

The newspaper said Brown declined to say how much the tax might raise from British banks but cited the annual 1.2 billion euros ($1.6 billion) envisaged by Germany for its banks and the 10 billion dollars planned for the United States levy as examples.

Last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after meeting Brown that they had agreed to work toward a coordinated European Union approach on a bank levy and push G-20 nations for a global stance on the issue.

The International Monetary Fund is expected to present proposals to G-20 finance ministers in Washington later in April that would be designed to make banks contribute toward bailouts.
Not bad enough we have Obama screwing us, now even one of our allies wants to screw us. I have no doubt that Obama will think this is a great idea.

fwiw...

OK...A "global responsibility levy" to make up for the irresponsibility of the involved governments.....Where do I sign the petition for that?...

Bag on the OWG faction all you want, but this adds a dose of credibility, eh?

that treacherous clown, brown, has his head so far up the 'arse' of the eu-brussels dictatorship that he thinks with them on 'our' side (their side, not mine!) that he'll get support from these eu-twats and they will one day rule the world.
but you already know that i reckon, with that obama right up to his chin in the brown stuff too, the nwo can only be just around the corner now!

yep. notice how they expect Germany to pay 1.2 billion and they expect the US to pay 10 billion....like 10 bil is nothing anymore.
Here's my question: who collects this "tax" and who gets to hold onto it??? This is just outta control.

Neither can we.

They are billing us for the mistakes of the past now and for the next several generations.

That seems to have created the thinking that will allow them to bill us for the mistakes of the future. But, those are no longer mistakes the second time around. Shame on them once. Shame on us twice.

Real nice.

The governments are so stupid. They throw around billions like nothing. A billion is A LOT of money. I like what nancy pelosi devil woman said when asked for how they came to a particular numerical figure once, she said that they didn't base it on facts, but just picked a really large number that would look good. LOL, incompetent.

Yeah, and WE are the voters that put the present regime into power. That f=does not say much for US.

Speaking for myself, I can only hope voters have got an earful for the next time around.

Maybe the rest of mind-numbed America, but I didn't vote for a single one of those tools.

"Don't you have an election coming up soon?"

We do on May 6th Won't make a blind bit of difference. Socialism is fantastic till the Socialists run out of everybody elses cash...
(If anything, an incoming Gov't will need to raise taxes to sort out the mess we're in!)

The UK is screwed BIG TIME. Too many left wing f...ing lay about loonies have put paid to us!

Still our fruitcake leaders strut around as if we we're something special. Last thing special we had a hand in was Concorde and that, like us, is long done for...

OK, with an attitude like that, you might as well accept what you have and fully expect it to get worse.

The point is it will get worse , it has to . Our current government has sold off everything we had to sell and borrowed more money than you could point a shed load of sticks at . At the same time it introduced hundreds of 'stealth' taxes , the revenue from which has been squandered . The only way that our debts can be repayed is by getting rid of the benefit culture , cutting beaurocracy and further increasing taxation . So , which ever government gets in , things will get tougher . Assuming that the current government is replaced , the next government run the risk of being blamed for the tough measures that will be required to stop the rot and then being voted out by the thick and the lazy at the next election .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Then, just do what potentially is going to be done here.

Vote OUT ALL incumbents.

The power of the vote is all we have. If it takes tough measures, then let it happen. The whiners will whine all day. Best to ignore them. They have been paid attention to far to long.

Hey just look at history....

Maggie is perceived as the hardest nastiest bastiard PM we ever had.... I happen to think all she was doing is sorting out the shyte mess the previous labourite sh.te had left behind.....

We are, as a country, reaching breaking point.... We are spent... Truly spent... Absolutely spent... Definately spent... Categoricaly spent... Problem is, our infamous leaders at the sharp end can't see it... yet...

Hey, and if Gordon can screw "O" for a bit as well good on him ;-)

Just maybe it needs to break all the way then. It certainly would give the rest of the world a serious message that socialistic crapola does not work.

Thats to bad.

Agree 100%

Our social system has made us a magnet for idle scum (aside from the politicians). We're known as the "land of milk and honey"...
