Fast400: that makes sense, really when you think about it.
LiPo's have a requirement of no more than 1C charge rate.
(some of the newer ones can take 2C and small ones 5C)
So, if you have a 2200mAh pack, then at it's 1C charge rate,
it's only going to get 2.2A input current, and it's going to
take 1 hour at 2.2A to get 2200mAh (2.2Ah) Of course, you tend not
to take the full 100% charge out of the battery, but charging is only
about 80% efficient, so it still takes 1 hour to put 1800mAh back in
to a 2200mAh battery. This is not counting balancing which is only at .1C usually, but if the pack is well balanced to begin with, you may only need to put in 30-60mAh to bring all the cells up to 4.20V.

You'd think a smart charger like the Imax B6 would charge and balance in one pass, it'd save some time and be nice for semi-unattended charging. (yeah, yea, always watch for LiPos charge, I know)

I do use mine to charge 2 3S1Ps in 6S mode with an 2x3S-6S adapter harness. That's a nice option for us 450 flyers.

When they start making 5C charging big LiPos, that will be nice, only take 10mins to recharge a pack. 4 packs could have you flying almost continuously. Give the last flied pack a rest, charging a pack, balancing a pack and flying the 4th.

All I'm saying is with a good higher power balancing charger that charges through the balancing lead and/or the discharge leads, I get as fast a charge as the battery is rated for. You have to be careful so as to maintain battery life. I use A123 RX batteries. Those bad boys top off in 10-15 minutes. Balance is almost a non-issue.

As far as the balancing act... I just don't see out of balance packs that often and many are saying you only need to balance once in a while. With the FMA chargers you simply stop once it goes into balancing mode if you want to just fly. When you get home do a slow full balance charge.

I just don't see the issue.

Agreed

I don't balance with every charge. When I want a simple fast quick charge, I hook the pack up to my Triton. If I ran the cells down a bit further than expected, I will throw them on a balancing charger to make sure the cell voltages are close, otherwise I only balance at home or if I am not going to be using the pack right away.

How do you like the A123's I looked at converting over to them, but haven't had the funds to do so yet.

Fast400,

Sounds like your chargers are working as they should. Goes to show that you don't need the expensive chargers to get the job done.

I think that is related to the overall condition your batteries are in. Newer batteries with modern chemistry work much better for the first couple hundred charges than the old stuff.

As you batteries start to wear out or if you overload them you will need to balance every time.

It's easy to find an excuse to do wrong. Hard is not to find an excuse to do right.

Can't beat them. I run them straight... no regulator. I love being able to charge them in minutes.

i see people talking all the time about how they are chargeing 3s batteries in like 30 minutes, i tend not to believe this.
been charging with the Cellpro 10S for about 18 months, at 2c my 3s batts are done in about 25-28 min.Would you like to see a picture of the screen showing the time and V and such at the end of a charge?and yes i am charging from 75-80% discharged, putting back about 1650-1750 mah

I've been charging at 2 and 3C since april of 07 with 0 issues

edit,I also charge my 6s 2500 mah bateries at 6 amps,it takes about 25 min to put back in about 1900 mah

when using a 50Watt max charger, you will not be able to charge a 2200mah battery at 2c,so no matter how you set it,its going to take 45-60 min

When they start making 5C charging big LiPos
they have these out NOW,the limitation is the chargers and power supplies.but several major manufactureres are set to release HIGH power chargers this year,FMA,TP and Hyperion are releasing the next generation of chargers soon
