401 gyro holds at 1650 rpm but not as well at 1750rpm
Hi guys,

I'm running a gy-401 and it holds perfectly at 1650 rpm (also running a gv-1 governor) when I switch to idle up 2 which is set for 1750 rpm my Predator starts to hunt to the right slowly. I have tried setting the epa/atv on channel 7 lower and higher with no change in behavior. The channel 7 switch and epa/atv functions as the gain since I am not using the gyro gain channel on my Hitec Eclipse for the gyro. I am using the normal gyro channel which is linked to the idle up modes to control my gv-1 switching and channel 7 to switch between hh and normal mode (I always leave it on HH mode).

Hunting to the right (nose) implies that there is too much tail input, is that correct? Could it be a vibration issue that only shows up on the higher rpm? I have it mounted on two layers of double sided tape.

Besides this slight hunting at the higher rpm the Preddie is an awesome flyer.

Thank you for any ideas,

Tom

my hunch is that you have 1-2 clicks of unintentional rudder trim in the higher speed mode.

Check your torque tube if the bearings are loose or the plastic case that hold the torque tube in place will do that it happen to me...

Hope this help!!

what radio r u using, u can actually make every flight with diffrent gain, i ve used gy401 and the bird can handle 2100hs, the only problem when u start flying fast backward it somtime blow out the direction, what u can do u do not adjust ur rudder trim, adjusting the tail atv is using limit at gyro, and make ur switch ie gyro sense to gyro and u can make 2 sense normal, idle 1 and idle 2 , what work fine on my setup higer gain at low HS and bit lower gain on higer HS but at this lower gain ur tail will tend to blow out during reverse flight or just get better gyro and now most high end gyro is cheap ie spartan quark and align 789. Which hold better then the 401Trex 600,700 AND 450, GY611, GY401, OS5H, OS91HZ, MGP, HS65HB, Scorpion 2221-8,

+1 -- I've chased around a few 401 problems that turned out to be trim. Make sure subtrim is at zero and trim in all flight modes are at center.

as a test, on the workbench, put the machine in Normal, ID1 and ID2 modes and observe the LED on the 401. do not touch the rudder stick.

it should be ON solid. If you have some trim which I think you do, you'll see the LED flash when you put it in ID1 or 2. if you do see
it flash, correct w/ rudder trim until it stops flashing.

Thanks for all the replies. I checked the trim in all 3 modes and they are all on zero. I forgot to check the subtrim on channel 3 (rudder) and channel 7 (gyro gain) and will do that tonight.

Thanks again,

Tom

Hi,

I checked and have no trim or subtrim or revo mixing on rudder/gyro channels. I noticed I had mounted the gyro on only one layer of tape. I may mount it on two this evening. I'm not sure why the vibes would only show up at 1750 and not at 1650, but I guess it's possible. If I wanted to mount using a layer of tape, a plate, and another layer of tape what would you guys suggest for the plate in the middle?

Thanks again for the ideas,

Tom

I use a hard sticky tape to mount the 401.. I mount it on the radio tray right next to the hole above the tank...The newer NX may not have this hole in the tray, if not, I would put it directly above the tank..
I hard mount in all my gassers...

Hi,

I just wanted to post that the problem was solved by using a thinner 3M mounting tape. I had two layers of the Futaba tape on it before. Thanks Bill for the help and to all who posted suggestions.

Thanks,

Tom
