what servos for a .50 using AR7100R rx and 2s unregulated?
Building an Aeolus .50 after a nearly three year break from the hobby. My old setups were always boring 4.8v systems with 9252 servos. I want something with some pop! Now that high voltage has been out for a while, there must be tons of knowledge as to which servos to avoid and which to use. Yes I've searched the forums but the results go back to the early days of HV and current knowledge has to be considered. I'm not around anyone flying high end setups so I'm trying to cut to the chase and get some 2010 knowledge on the subject.

I don't want to go overboard on cost, but I don't want to lose a $1500 heli to a $25 price difference on a servo either. I've been looking at a 3 pack of JR DS8717's around $350 but the official rating is only 6.0v. How are these working out for 2s unregulated fliers? I usually run Futaba servos but I'm willing to run what I need to for a reliable and fun setup. Haven't seen much info on HV setups using the Futabas.

Looking to run an AR7100R with unregulated 2s lipo, but I see a *lot* of these rx's for sale lately. I kind of prefer the Futaba 8FGH radio and the only reason I'd be going DX7-SE is to get the 7100R's features. I like the idea of less parts and less wiring, but if I'm doing the wrong thing here please chime in.

I'm stoked just thinking about flying this thing with all of the new technology that has come out in the past few years. Thanks for any input.

there are new hitec HV servos that are a little bit more expensive than the 8717. you might want to try those out. but a friend is running his 8717 on a 2s lipo using ar7100 and he says it made it better coming from a 6v set up. the align ds610 servos are cheap and most are having luck running them on a straight 2s lipo but them align servos are a gamble i heard. they either work or they will crash your heli on the first flight regardless if it's on 6v or 2s lipo

Just use a 2S LiFePO4 instead of Lipo, then you can use 6V servos with the AR7100R.

Thanks for the replies... This is my planned setup:

8FGH with included 8 ch rx
Fromeco Kiwi bus/reg
Cyclics on direct 2s

I'm down to the following servo options:

JR 8917HV (around $450 for 3)
Align DS610 (around $210 for 3)
JR 8717 (the 3 pack deal around $350)

The aligns look very well made and in researching posts, the failure rate is similar to the 8717's. I can't find any failure information on the 8917HV's, but maybe thats because hardly anyone is spending that kind of money on servos. To complicate it even more, I prefer Futaba servos but I'm not gonna run 2s on $140 servos that aren't spec'd out to do it.

I would recommend Arizona over Kiwi. Arizona will go to about 7.5-8.0v on high side and down to 6v on low side on the adjustable bus voltage.

This allows you to use any cyclic servos including your favorite Futaba servos. When the input voltage is lower than output, then the regulator will simply bypass regulation and input will equal output.

For longevity of servo life, I would recommend not using brass gears as they develop slop fast. On eCCPM 50s, we have used Futaba 9252 or even 3010s with no problem. We have also use Hitec 6975HB or 7975HB servos. When you crash, you will have to replace the gears but that is no big deal. As long as you do not crash, gears will maintain perfect mesh and very little play which is important in helis.

On highend (I do not think you need but people put in what they want), you can use JR 8717, 8717hv or Hitec 7940th. We have 7975 on one Aeolus and 7935tg (preproduction 7940th) on the other. Pretty much all of Justin's 50size heli (Raptor, 600e, Aeolus 50, RJX X50) either have Futaba 9252s, 3010s or Hitec 6975hb, 7975hb.

I do not think you need to spend over $250 on cyclic servos on 50sized helis.

On Aeolus;

Before mounting the engine mount, be sure to shave about 0.02in or 0.5mm off the 4 hex spacers. This should prevent the plastic engine mount from developing. You want the frames to squeeze the engine mount itself not the spacer.

Thanks for the info on the Aeolus engine mount. I'll definitely do that.

As for the Arizona, I was considering it when I was thinking DX7SE/AR7100R. It won't work with the Futaba R6008HS receiver which does not allow over 6 volts regulated.. I mean unless I run the whole setup at 6 volts. I also prefer running the cyclics directly on an unregulated bus because it's less of a load on the regulated circuit and much less of a chance of the regulator failing.

If I may ask
why go 7.4 V instead of 6 V

6 volt is so... yesterday As I said in the original post, I've always had 4.8 setups but I can afford to do a 2s this time around. No point stopping half way. I want to be able to do sudden stops and pumping maneuvers. The only excuse I want to have left for not being able to do it is my own lack of skill.

LiFePo, something I've looked at. It's a pretty big drop off in volts from a fully charged LiPo pack. I'd also have to get a charger that works with it, but there are quite a few in the $50 price range.
