Why?
I was looking at the videos and pics from the Birmingham funfly and noticed the large majority of pilots were flying nitro helicopters. Is this just a continuation of the "old habits die hard" or are there advantages of nitro over electric?

i realize the size of the helicopters dictate 600 or 700 series birds, but is there something i am missing?

Apparently a big can! I know flight times are limited with batteries, but other than that i am not sure electrics do not have an advantage over nitro since e-motors produce torque throughout their speed range while nitro needs to spool up to build torque. obviously the nitro guys dont have a problem with torque, just curious as to why.

Girls are more attracted to guys who fly nitro helis!

Seriously, have you ever had someone ask how much the batteries cost then ask how long it will fly for? Answering these questions out loud really makes you want to cry!

If you have a 700E and fly 3D the answers would be £300 and 5 mins!!

someone will post and say batteries are expensive, they only fly for 4 seconds and one crash can ruin a battery

someone else will counter that a nitro motor is expensive and can be ruined with one lean run.

nitros run forever and noone ever has to charge anything

electrics have more power and you dont have to fiddle around as much

they are ALL cool, fly what you like

seriously though,do a search on nitro vs elec and close this thread as it WILL degenerate into a pissing match

The 700 blade size electrics tend to be noticeably heaver. The FAI guys are liking electrics because their moves aren't so erratic. Mark Ryder

I prefer batteries on birds smaller than 600.

Nitro on a 600. I bought a 600N vs. a 600E because I didn't want to pay for and charge lots of big batteries.

It's great that both options are there for you.

Yay!!!
Finally.A completely new topic to discuss

I have never owned a nitro heli but will soon I bet.
I have however had a slew of E helis and loved them all.

I have only ruined one lipo with a crash.
Trex 500 of course.Align does so like to use the lipo as a front bumper.lol...

My battery costs are low really.
At my current skill level,a 5 minute flight with some inverted stuff and ground buzzing will leave me mentally exhausted.

When I get better and fly every trick without worries or concern, maybe a nitro will come into the picture for longer flight times.

For now,E helis are better for me.
I literally never use the word literally right.

I guess I didnt state my question properly.....I didnt mean to start a war nitro vs electric. I was curious as to why most pilots at the LV and Birmingham funflies chose to fly nitro. NOT, which is better.

Sorry for the confusion

i live out of town during the week until my house sells so i can move closer to my job. I take only my electric (600e) with me while away. If i flew my nitro as much as I fly my electrics every day all day after work, I'd be broke from fuel costs. I usually fly 5 flights a day after work, @ 6-7 min. a flight. All i have to pay is....nothing, vs. a $35 gal of fuel every 10 or so flights. I love my nitro's, but thank god I have my electric also.

Scott, its simply because flying 700 electric helis at funflys and comps is just not practical.60% of the time, it works every time!

False. Walked into my apartment elevator the other day and the absolutely hottest Asian girl I've even seen started a conversation with me over my Logo 600. The girls def. dig electric helicopters.

The cost alone keeps me flying my 50 size...I know its expensive to feed a 90 size ship but I imagine that the batteries are WAY more expensive than the cost of fuel. Also, theres the cost of a large generator to power chargers at the field.

If it is small, then electric is the only way to go IMHO but bigger than 450 size seems to start compounding the cost issue for me.

What pre-planning?
I plug it in and go.
No harder to take a few lipos off the shelf as it is to go to the garage for a can of fuel.
