I'm back in, Aeolus style
Couldn't resist the temptation to get an Aeolus on the march madness promotion. Not only a great deal, but shipping was free too so now I have enough left to get a nice 2s lipo for it.

This is going to take a while to get in the air. I have a tight budget for the next month while I scrape together the rest of the money I have to send to the tax man in a couple of weeks.

Anyway my planned setup will be:

DX7-SE
AR7100R
YS56
GY520 (not sure which of the two tail servos to use yet)
Rotortech 610 mains (included with heli deal)
Cyclic servos not sure yet, something high voltage though

Coming into this, I was really set on the 8FGH radio and still might go that way, but the DX7/AR7100R seemed to be more logical to run a 2s setup with high voltage cyclic servos. Also to have the built in rev limiter saves on wiring and weight.

So much has changed in the two and a half years I've been out! I welcome any input on using the DX vs Futaba gear as I'm sure I've missed some important detail on running 2s.

Either Specktrum or Futaba will work great for you. If you are familiar with Futaba programming stick with it.

I go the Spektrum/JR way for 2 reasons.
1). The Spektrum optioon leaves you open to get any of the wide aray of Bind and Fly toys.
2). Futaba radios feel like they are designed for little hands in my opinion. My meat hooks fit better on the JR.

It's here!! Wow very nicely packaged. The gelcoat on the canopy has a small crack on the lower front but otherwise the whole thing looks kick butt. I'd like to see more orange on the button of the canopy anyway so I'll just fix that before I repaint it.Aeolus 50 3D CF - 8FGH/R6008HS - GY520/BLS251 - BLS451 x 3 - Multigov - S3155 - YS56

Ordered from ahf-usa.com. The QC seal on the box was broken, but I think they had to open it to put in the new shim kit for the torque tube drive. Popiterflyer is mailing me the instructions. I've been top to bottom through the box, definitely no cd or book in it.

I'd be upset if I had all of the parts here ready to put in it, but as it is I won't have this thing flying for a month or two anyway. Still, I was hoping to build it this weekend.

I scanned it in, with the shims still stapled to the top left.

I did find a manual only for the GF version, but it has a torque tube section in the back of the manual. I'm really itchin to build this thing so I might just load that manual up and start on it.

Link is here: http://www.ahf-rc.com/Download.aspx

It's compressed in the .rar format.

Very impressed with the build so far. This will be extremely easy to work on. The landing skid mount in ingenious. I've got the main frame, skids and tail completed. All thats left is the head/autohub assy and the radio tray & linkages.

Top quality on everything I've touched so far. The one piece hex headed linkage balls are a dream compared to two piece with a philips that I'm so used to.

Wish I had the money for the rest of my hardware so I could see how this thing flies!

Some highlights from my build..

Just an overall shot for reference. The first serial numbered heli I've owned!

I love this.. inspection holes for the torque tube drive gears, pin and easy access for link pliers to the tail rod linkage!

Note the fuel tank protected from the frame by rubber. Kit also included 2 fuel link shut-off clips. Third bearing for mainshaft above tank.

Another kick-butt design feature.. the skid struts hold the frame spacers for easy install/removal of the skids. The engine will come out without removing the skids also!

Nice tail rod guides with bolt and nut.. Also note boom support X bracket included with kit.

Super clean tail box. Very easy to work on this tail.

So I have the whole kit built now. I bolted on the blades and took it out to show off to my fellow heli fliers. Now I just need to save up for electronics and the engine.

Here is a list of issues I've run into. Since my QC seals were broken, some of these issues might not have happened on an unopened box. I'm not gonna complain much though for the price, but it would have sucked if I was in hurry to get in the air:

1> Instruction book was missing (AHF-USA was quick to mail one to me)

2> Canopy Grommets missing

3> Bent flybar rod (two places, visible looking down length and especially rolling it)

4> One stripped screw hole in autohub (factory installed & overtightened)

5> A few ball links had metal blocking part of the hex holes so the driver could only go about half way in.

The following things are not big issues but worthy of noting:

1> The instructions regarding thrust bearings specify installing the large I.D. towards the inside, small I.D. towards the outside. The actual thrust bearings have laser etching on the large I.D. piece indictating "Out". Could lead to confusion among less experienced builders.

2> The canopy paint had a couple of cracks from being somewhat 'crushed'. Nothing of concern to me but might hurt someone's feelings.

3> Inconsistent pre-assembly. I actually really like the fact that many parts are pre-assembled. For example, the tail box, autohub and swashplate. Of course you should check every last bolt and this is where it got interesting. One of my main blade grips was assembled and had threadlocker. The other was loosely assembled with no threadlocker at all. The autohub was completely assembled and thread-locked, but they really overtorqued the screws going through the gear into the auto-hub. One actually stripped and was loose. I checked all the others and they were not moving, so I tried to tighted the loose one up after adding some threadlocker. I couldn't tighten it - was stripped. The reason I bring this up is less exeperienced builders might pick up one grip and it's perfect, and then assume the second one is too.

More really awesome things I've found:

First, let me say I'm coming from the old Raptor 30v1 days where it was cheap and you expected cheap. Now the Raptors are not cheap but you still end up with cheap. Not on the Aeolus. I continue to be impressed with the design, parts quality and bonus items.

1> You just have to see the radio tray to understand how amazing it is. The governor sensor magnet (included) goes on TOP of the clutch bell. The actual speed sensor mounts to the radio tray above the clutch bell. This means when you remove the tray, no more cutting zip-ties or whatever to unplug the sensor. Awesome stuff.

1.5> Wow at the feather spindle diameter!!

2> The linkages are perfect. I remember tight raptor linkages and reaming them or squeezing them etc. Not this heli, adjust, snap them on and it's a perfect union. Smooth and slop free. Will they hold up? We'll see.

3> The main drive gear/autohub assembly. I popped it right in place, dropped the main shaft in, put in the Jesus bolt, pulled up on the head and tightened the collar down. Everything lines up perfectly, no need for shims.

4> Canopy retention clip: No-nonsense with a solid snap. Wish I had my grommets. >

Next up, I have to make all of the linkages and then start installing electronics as money permits.

I'm now the proud owner of a shiny new 8FGH system.. now I just have to get a GY520... and servos.. and batteries.. oh yes and that YS56. Hmm, this is gonna take some more money.

Unfortunately I must report I am still awaiting the replacement/missing parts from AHF-USA, including the manual.
