X-Box 360, Forza Motorsport, and RROD/RLOD
I've read an article in the November 2nd 2009 issue of Auto Week about Forza Motorsport 3 being the best-looking driving game on the market. I had seen Gran Turismo Prologue on a friend's Playstation, but never felt the urge to actually spend money on a system. Until now, after seeing Forza on another buddy's X-Box 360. Wow!!

While playing the game, we litterally witnessed the console dying on us. It froze about a dozen times, and now has the 3 red LED's around the power button. It is no longer working.

My specific question is this: The game looks good enough to make me want to buy an X-Box 360 to play it. But looking online, I get the impression the problem affecting the X-box 360's have not been resolved, in which case I will not buy one.

Does anyone here know what the story is? Should one stay away from the X-Box 360? Is there some kind of a pre-emptive fix, like getting an outside fan to cool the console to prevent the problem?

For a car fan, that game does look to be a whole lot of fun Especially with a good steering wheel / pedal combo. 3 pedals would be the ultimate, I wish someone made a reasonably priced one!!

I'd love to hear some feed-back on this topic, both the game itself, and the X-Box 360 issues / fixes. I am outside of the USA, and would not have access to the warranty.

Many Thanks,

Gigi

The CPU and GPU sockets on the older X-box 360's were assembled with different solder than what was specified for. The solder they were assembled with had a higher melting point that that of the specified solder so the socket solder joints are literally cracking.

No matter what system, Xbox 360 or PS3 they all will heat up over time and die. Red ring of death on the 360 and yellow ring of death on the PS3. Todays gaming console have huge power consumption thus generate heat.

Using an external fan helps. Don't use an external fan that uses the power supply of the game console as it will draw additional current. Current = heat. I used a small 120 volt fan that suck the hot air away from the console.

Our 360 lasted a long time and yes it eventually died with the Red Ring of Death.

Make sure your game console has free flowing air circulation. This will dissipate the heat. Also, dust accumulation will restrict the flow of air.

Good info!
Great, thanks for the feed-back. It's ordered

I will keep it clean and will force-cool it. I am also getting a newer one with the HDMI connector, which are supposedly better.

Has anyone tried to use the clutch feature on Forza? It's funny as all heck, I think...

I may spring for a fancy steering wheel with 3 pedals in the future.

Thanks,

Gigi
