Radikal Maiden
Will give you more info and pics soon.

Sorry been busy.

Radikal HD

Oil: Ryobi semi-synth
Fuel: Unleaded
Mix 30:1
Blades Rotortech 620
Spartan Gyro + 650
Align 610's on cyclic
Futaba 3152 Throttle
Align 2in1 reg
Spektrum rx
Century exhaust
Min Air air filter
Pull strter option
Outrage 2s 2500mah lipo (rx)
1s 5350mah lipo (ignition)

Needles: h=1.5 L=1 3/8

Went to petrol station. Bought 1litre of petrol. (£1.15)

Went to field. Bloody strong gusts + winds. Oh and sleet.

Tried to start. No bulb for priming so i put finger over carb hole. No luck.

Tried a starter. Hooked up 2 my car. The starter started smoking.

Then i squirted fuel direct into carb. It started .

15 mins on ground.

Re-fueled.

2 gentle hover flights with rest periods (for heli). Gentle? It was blowing crazy.

Every restart was easy.

I think im gonna like this....alot

Had to stop and go to work.

More to come

Update

13 April 2010

Well its back in the air again

Nothings changed except rotortechs are no more

Now using aerotech 640mm woodies . Yeah thats right woodies.

Had 3 flights today.

*Still running semi-synthetic ryobi now @ 30:1

*Switching to TTS full synthetic very soon.

*I have bought the Hanson alloy block (between engine and carb). Will put that on tonight as the original is leaking

*Leaned low speed to 1 1/4 & Hi was leaned in 1/16th.

*Adjusted the throttle curve and while i was on the 3rd flight today i felt the engine getting smoother.

*7 tanks so far (12 mins)

approx 300mah per flight for ignition
approx 300 mah per flight rx

Flight report:

weather = 8deg cent + 20 mph winds bit gusty.

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

The model felt a bit heavy but got better when the engine was tuned better. The model didn't feel "pitchy" either. Flips were really tight.

The model tracks very well and doesn't seem to have phasing issues.

i am using 85mm tails instead of the longer originals. The tail has good authority. The very high tail ratio of approx 5:1 gives good power.

Century Torpedo exhaust bit loud.

So far i am really liking the model. I got it to replace a 50 nitro. Ok it wont have the performance of a 50 nitro but it will be close. The fuel so far has cost me. It has cost me no more than £3 for the 7 12 min flights. The flights will get longer but i am not filling the tank up to the top.

I have the pull start option and it is so easy to start. Looks like this will be a good everyday machine

More to follow.................

Regards

Weather
Wind 15mph
Temp 8 deg C

Modification
Installed a Hanson aluminium insulator block + teflon gasket.

Flight report:
4 fligfhts today @12 mins each

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros + stalls + rolls + inverted

I had noticed the original carb insulator block had been leaking a little so replaced with an after market Hanson machined aluminum block.

Model feels better with every flight. I still have to dial in the controls as the cyclics at low speed arent what i want. It is setup for slow cyclics. Paddles are 30g maybe change to 20-22g.

Model tracks very straight. Very smooth turns. However i can still and will always feel the weight. I have been flying it today the way i flew my nitro 50. I am impressed. This model will replace my 50 nitro. So far it fills that roll well.

I am getting over speeding in fast descents so will be fitting a GV-1 gov.

Engine feels and sound very smooth. This is good as it is totally stock.

Bearing Failure

15-04-10

I suspected that the one way was starting to let go. After close examination i found the bearing has failed.

Apparently this has been reported by some folks with the common denominator being a 6.0 gear ratio. That is the ratio i am using. 14 tooth pinion + 84 tooth main. I am awaiting a 90 tooth main gear.

A replacement oneway has been ordered from Midlands .

Bearing Failure

17-04-10

The bearing that sits on top of the clutch pinion (CNBB1015 10x15x4) failed. This bearing needs to be of the best quality as it is put under major stress!

Also changed the bearing on the starter shaft CNBB513 (5x13x4)

I ordered the replacements from: RCbearings.co.uk, For a friction free RC!

Replacements:

1 ea. 10x15x4 (CERAMIC MS) Bearing (x1) MR6700czz £2.79 1 ea. 5x13x4 (CERAMIC MS) Bearing (x1) MR695czz £2.99

These bearings were considerably cheaper and are of higher quality.

I will update on there usage.

Update
Added extra line into tank so could fill + empty properly.

I flipped the top bearing block 180 degrees and added an extra ball race + collar. (pic to follow)

Main shaft has slipped 1mm after pitch pumps so must re-tighten.

Flights

24-04-10

Mixed fuel today. Couldn't find my 1L bottle of semi-synth oil . So i used my Castrol TTS fully synth @ 32:1

Flight report:

weather = 14deg cent + 15 mph winds bit gusty.

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

Had to re-tune due to different oil. Engine ran fine on the semi-synth. Head is set up for 3D. I will change the ratio as i dont like the "feel" of it. It feels un-balanced for my style. Blades became a bit noisier. I think it was the covering it had sagged. Will fix with a hair dryer .

The cyclics are pretty quick on this heli. Turns and flips are so tight. Discovered up + down play in main shaft. I did lots of pitch pumping today. The collar slipped approx 1mm.

Enjoyed the flights today

A minutes silence please for the passing of the Radikal

Flights

25-04-10

Castrol TTS fully synth @ 32:1
Leaned top slightly so ran better

Running 85mm plastic tail blades and have great taol authority

Flight report:

weather = 14deg cent + 15 mph winds bit gusty.

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

5 flights today. Hard cyclic moves. Really need a gov as i bogged it a few times. I setup the mixing on the head for sport/3D and it feels more "balanced" for me

I tried to record the action but its a no go

I got over confident and got lower and lower.

Yep you guessed it.... I was doing rolls at 3ft and the ground hit me HARD

Parts list:
Blades (woodies )
Main shaft
Feathering shaft
Boom
Tail Hub
Tail Output shaft
Canopy mounts
Skids
Main gear

Not too bad. It really hit hard!!!!

The heli was going so well. It really is a pleasure to fly. However it desperately needs a gov. I will be fitting the GV-1 with the Spektrum backplate sensor.

I have ordered the 620 blades + 90T main gear so i will have a gear ratio of 6.42. This woll suit the heli better and allow the engine to function properly without too much loading .

I will let you know how it goes but you know what?????? so far i'm loving it

Back in the air

Added GV-1 Gov + Spektrum Backplate sensor + Aluma FX lead (enables compatibility for spektrum with GV-1). With this method i got 95% signal strength. Below is the bracket i made out of a plastic lid

Added Quick uk orange skids

620 Aerotech woodies used

Gear ratio changed from 6.0 84 main + 14 pinion. To 6.42 90 main + 14 pinion.

Gov set to 1750, 1800, 1850.

RX drain = 300mah per 12 min flight
Ignition drain = 285mah per 12 min flight
Flights

04-05-10

Had 4 flights

Flight report:

weather = 14deg cent + 20 mph winds gusty.

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

Engine feels alot happier with the 6.42 gear ratio.

Govenor helped with overspeeding. The model handles wind very well. I'm still dialing in the engine but i have no vibes.

The auto performance is acceptable. There isn't alot left over at the end. This will improve with better blades. The tail belt increases the drag on the system.

Model behaved very well today and didnt really get affected by the wind. Controls felt very balanced in slow and low.

I will be trying another set of Rotortechs as soon as they arrive
If it ain't broke then break it.

Flights

05-05-10

Had 5 Flights

Flight report:

weather = 14deg cent + 5 mph winds

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

Still finalising engine tuning. Model does not display any vibes. Practiced slow and low today. This model suits this style very well. The extra weight adds to the stability. In all the flights i have done (approx 20) the tail has proven to be very strong. Even in strong wind. This is due to the 5:1 ratio. I am only running cheap 85mm plastic blades. 92mm recommended.

The exhaust is not the quietest but its on par with the Align pipes

My plans are:
test the new Stator Gator
Test Rotortech 620 blades (again)
Test Flybarless on this machine

Enjoyed the flights today

Swapped out the Spektrum sensor for the Stator Gator
Removed Gasket from Exhaust

Flights

21-05-10

Had 2 Flights

Flight report:

weather = 23 deg cent + 5 mph winds

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros. + inverted

Had 1 flight with the Spektrum sensor but i experienced coughing/stroking once in a while. I changed to the Stator gator and i only had 1 flight with it. However it seems more responsive. The stumbling seems to have vanished.

I landed and tightened up the exhaust while hot

The auto bearing has locked up again though But i was enjoying it so much i kept flying.

This helicopter is really improving my collective management.

I am running 1870 in Idle up 2. I would like 1950 but i am running woodies . I am not properly in the power band but i will get there

Today i enjoyed hard fast big flying then low slow smooth. The heli suits both roles perfectly

Very informative post. Thanks for putting your time and effort into this post. I don't currently own a gasser, but, the more I'm reading about this bird the more attractive it's sounding. I'm sure Century knows of this one-way problem, wander if the plan to fix it? I don't plan on buying high priced nitro fuel again. Man the break-in process seems pretty scary. Thanks again

Thanks Josh

I have lots more to add. Will update a.s.a.p.

Century are investigating the bearing.

The break in is easy so no worries.

High fuel costs are a thing of the past with this model
