Effects of installing a bigger muffler?
Im building an SDX, which came with a muffler, Im not using it on the SDX, I was wondering if using that muffler on a Shuttle with OS 32 would make it run any different. Is the OS 32 going to have to be tuned a little different with the slightly larger stock muffler? Or will it not make that much of a difference?

This is the reason for wanting to change mufflers for those interested.
My last incident with my Shuttle was due to my muffler falling apart in flight. The part that bolts to the exhaust port on the motor stayed tight, it was the bolt that runs the length of the muffler came loose so I was flying with half of a muffler. The oil from the exhaust was not being directed down and away from the helicopter, it was sort of spraying all over the side of it and up into the clutch. The oil in the clutch caused it to have a slip and grab, slip and grab and so on for the last 10 - 15 seconds of the flight. Yea, it scared the hell out of me, I brought her in hot but under control, somewhat. Landed it in a plowed farm field the tail hit a high spot in the ground, shot the tail blades across the field (MIA), bent the tail shaft and broke the tail pitch plate. All in all I was not too upset with the results, It could have been a lot worse.
I received the parts in the mail yesterday, started working on it last night, hopefully I will be able to fly her tomorrow. I have the day off & it is supposed to be beautiful.

that pipe (IMO) would be TOO large. I'm sure you'd lose a lot of back pressure.

Thanks for the offer on the pipe. I already bought an engine pipe combo last week. OS 55 HZ, GP exhaust pipe.

What effects would loss of back pressure present? Does it loose power?

The stock hirobo muffler from the sdx kit actually works well on the o.s 32sxh. I would suggest epoxying the two halves together to prevent seperation!

Could the larger muffler cause a side to side vibration upon spool up? I tried to fly the shuttle since installing the larger muffler, now it has a bad vibration. This all follows the incident of the muffler falling apart and the hard landing that bent the tail shaft. I thought the main shaft may have been bent, I took it out and rolled it on a flat surface, it is not bent.

if the engines tuned correctly the exhaust won't be a problem
and i would say something else is bent/ not running true
it looks like its time to go back over it ans check everything again

When I spooled it up the, first time with new muffler, I had not changed any carb needle settings. Could it be that far off on needle settings to make it shake, or does it sound like something is bent?

with a change in the muffler will need the carb needles reset
try the easest thing first which is to tune the engine

the std black shuttle muffler is an open chamber where as the sceadu/sdx std muffler has a removable baffle this will make a difference in the engine tuning

With the new muffler would you think I would need to open up the needle or close it a bit.

with any change in the muffler or a change of fuel i alway go rich then lean it off as required
it saves a lean run and an engine rebuild

I flew the Shuttle today for the first time since checking the main shaft, the vibration is gone. I richened the carb setting up about 4 clicks when it was all said and done.
Thanks to those that helped out once again.
