DIY - cells change in 14MZ / 12Z battery pack
Hello guys,

Its been a while since i posted a DIY thread, but here goes...

I was very disappointed to find that my Futaba 14MZ batteires lost their performace (capacity) after a short period of time. this has been discussed a lot on forums, and it seems that Futaba is using very cheap Li-Ion cells in their high end Tx packs.

One alternative is to buy a new pack which is quite costy at 90 $USD:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...p?&I=LXJYN9&P=7

Another is to order a Sony NP-F570 pack, which looks the same just in dark grey, and can be had for about 30-40$ on Ebay, but im not sure about the quality of the cells used in that one also.

I thought about replacing the cells inside the pack with Fromeco Relion 2600mAh cells, but this seemed impossible since the pack seems to be glued together.

Well, today i did it. after slowly taking it apart it appears the case is hel on with 2-3 tbs of plastic on each side, but the cells themselves (green in the pic) are glued with a little silicone - this is what holding it together.

after carefully prying it apart i managed to get in there and start digging.

As you can see, i simply removed the cells from their solering points. note there is one long tab which is used for the inner balancer. i cut it with a cutter as far close to its tip as possible, and soldered it to the fromeco pack tab.

The fromeco tab (pink cells) is just a stock Relion 2600mAh pack, which i removed the shrick wrapping from, and desoldered the wires. the tabs on the new cells were folded on top of the cells in order to reach the soldering points on the PCB, and were then soldered.
A quick smear of some silicone on the top and bttm of the cells, and closing the case back together, holdng it tightly closed with some masking tape while i carefully CA the seam line in the case (so it doesnt break open), and there you have it - a closed pack with Fromeco 2600mAh cells - low cost, high quality, replaceable and the best of all - the satisfaction of doing it on your own !

Hope you guys like it. Have a look at the pics for clarification of the stages of work.

How dose it charge? I thought the 14MZ pack was a Lithium Ion, and not a mAh? Good job on the build. I have been thinking about doing the same thing.

13DM - Neat job on the rebuild. Have you noticed any difference in the percentage volts reading on the Tx after the change?

I have a couple of spare (pattern) packs and when fully charged they invariably read less than 100%, whereas the Futaba ones always read 100% after charge.
Rymps - His last picture shows the remodelled pack on charge on the original Li charger.

Thanks for posting! I bought a NP-F570 off ebay for $15 shipped from China...but it was garbage. One flight and it was down to 60%.

So I split the case using a single edge razor blade, just a few passes and the seam was opened. Batteries held in place double sided tape. The battery straps were easily lifted off the battery with needle nose pliers so I have the full length to resolder once I get some cells in.

I've been using a genuine Sony NP-570 for four years and it has worked as well if not better than the stock Futaba battery. One thing to be careful of is that there are lots of rip-off and clone packs out there that are not genuine Sony packs. I have four NP-F570 packs and will only buy them from a reputable authorized Sony dealer.

Unfortunately, the Sony cells are only 2200mAh IIRC.

I too have had good luck with the 570...wasn't knocking it. Just don't buy from our friends in China at a ridicules price (unless all you’re after is the case!)

Mine was a genuine Sony in original packaging. No telling what the DOM was though.

What dose the little tab do on the bottom of the Futaba pack? The Sonys do not have this.

Can you post some pics of the internals of the Futaba pack?

That little tab slide back and forth from black to green when you've charged the pack.
