Ya, really, I had a friend tell me it was better than Lord of the rings?????

Sure the CG was good but the story is same old same really, certainly nothing special.

Seems a trend though to stick to proven formula. Take the new Sherlock Holmes. sure it may seem different, Downey sure does play a different Holmes that Doyle ever wrote about but if you really think it through, it's really just like any another cop movie. You got two cop partners who work well together but one partner is leaving and the more reckless partner wants him to stay and of course a case happens to come along to keep them together (anyone see either bad boys 1 OR 2 or any of the lethal weapon movies or any of dozens of others cop movies using the same formula)

Too bad but I think it was just cameron jumping on the new 3D movie bandwagon and they overhyped the movie to drum up more interest.

This is generally happens when people expect too much from a movie.
Avatar is a movie Period... It has a story in it (whether you like it or not; whether it is same old or not); just like every movie does, there is love story in it as well (ain't gonna happen without it) then some cool visual effects and some 3D on top of it to complete.
You guys didn't pay more for this movie(unless you watched it on Imax 3D) than you pay for other movies. Althought this movie was 2.5-hour long, it didn't cost more to watch it.
So I wonder what you guys expected to have after the movie was done?
You didn't possibly think that this movie would save the world, did you?
Did you guys read the story of this movie? Did you guys know how long it took for this project to come alive? This movie was a long-term project for James Cameron. It was something that he had wanted to do years ago but couldn't due to lack of technology. A lot of details, alot of work, efford went into creating this movie. Did you guys know they created a language just for this movie? It alone took years.
It was a regular movie for me at first but then I read about it and as I read, I was amazed how much detail they included in mamking this movie.
So please look at it as a whole; don't bash it just because it has same old, same old story. And after all, it is a movie guys, the main purpose of making it was to make money; not to please you.

Iskoos, I agree with what you are saying, I'm not here because I thought it was horriable, I replied because I find that the whole hype around this movie was actually more interesting than the movie itself.

For all the detail and time and effort, it really didn't come out looking any better than a typical harry potter movie. Not that the harry potter movies are that bad.

Just, well, Harry is no Gandolf if you know what I mean...

Thats kinda what I meant. It wasn't bad just not what I thought the hype made it out to be.Not much different than the Toy Story stuff as far as the animation in my opinion. But then again I'm not much of a movie person anymore either.I love the smell of nitro in the morning..

Did you see it in 3D?

I agree, there wasn't much of a plot, which is why the Hurt Locker won the Oscars, but the movie was absolutely beautiful in 3d.

I don't think the 2d version would do the movie any justice.

I've seen it once, I don't have any real desire to see it again.

As for the flick, we haven't seen it. Based on comments here and elsewhere we're waiting for it to come out on DVD. We deem it home-theater worthy but not movie-theater worthy. Popcorn ready though. How 'bout them chimps, eh?

regarding avatar, the simple minded are easily entertained.

just look at what qualifies as a 'hit' tv show: wheel of fortune and american idol.

i rest my case.

The difference is the "green" message mixed in the plot.

Sorry you missed it.

it was marketed, by the movie's makers, as the best thing since sliced bread. So, of course, everyone had to go see what it was all about which made the movie a TON of money.

I didn't think Titanic was all that great either!

True, but movies today all seem to need to go over the top, I mean I'm sure we heli guys would all watch it if they just kept letting the robot do the work but what about people who don't find RC all that exciting? Would THEY care if the robot got blown up? The whole movie would lose it's edge and the awards....

As compared to the other flicks out there this year, the hurt locker actually had a plot. After seeing it, I didn't think it was Oscar worthy, but when there's nothing else nominated, the mediocre rule.

Realistic has nothing to do with it, this is entertainment.

Top Gun wasn't realistic, and I'm sure it was embarassing to watch for anyone who was a military pilot, but I still see it on TV every other weekend.

Any Fireman who watches a Ron Howard Fire flick is probably embarrassed as well! Ooohhhh watch out for the Monster it'll get ya! LOL

I still think Avatar isn't worth seeing in 2d (big or little screen).
