Kevin is still agonising over his spectra tail. Mine started going allover the shop after I richened the engine a tad..but way more than even a rich engine should do..I still havent got to pulling it all apart (again).. frankly getting silly for bench to flying time.

Predator got fixed up after his wanderlust and his tail is soggy in the hover. In fact I was flying my 500 today and the hook tape safety slipped off followed by the gyro coming adrift from it's align gel pad.. It was interesting landing that and very reminiscent of an extreme form of preddie tail behaviour. Now preddies gyro is thoroughly stuck down on gel pad etc but makes me think it has to be a mounting issue rather than other vibes. Not a sign of vibe in fins or skids etc and a sweet engine note.

Looks like nest is going to be experimentation with assorted pads/plates/gels to find the best combo for him. Again more bench time than air time.

WhilstI accept other folk get them right or have more luck I'm still minded to shove them on a shelf and get a flying life instead of keeping investing time and resources. I've ordered a 700N for big fun. The fuel costs will be cheaper than my gasser aggros. <sigh>

Hi

Well I have had a simmilar gyro mount problem,
What worked out for me was:

CSM gyro mount, with homemade brackets

A homemade velcro/industrial elastic material strap

This way, I was abel to tigthen/loosen the gyro until no
vibes reached the gyro it self, result a rock steady tail,

Regards Bo

Hey Peter, I'm not agonising over the tail any more

Solved that and thought I was back on track and ended up with a lean running motor, one thing after another! No leaks, so must be crap in the carb or a fuel line issue somewhere. One thing after another, the Helibug is almost ready, if that meets my needs it could be yet another Spectra for sale...

The forcast for tomorrow is excellent.. my 12S600 needs a quick post fix test flight and then I'm determined to sort preddies tail. There's less mechanical play/slop anywhere in his tail than on my 600N (which flies like a dream) and there's no visible vibes.. so it's got to be the gyro mounting (or the gyro)

I wonder if the recent zeal block was dodgy.. certainly very wobbly gel. So I've trimmed up a thin bit of flashing lead as an attenuation plate and remounted on standard futaba pads sandwiching it.. the velcro over the top is separated by double sided foam tape so it won't add vibes.. just there as security.

We'll see how that goes..but I'll take a bunch of options.. foam tapes, align gel pad and more zeal and see what works....

I had to take my gyro off the recent batch of Zeal I had, it was like a wobbly jelly sat up there...

You could watch the tail servo twitching like mad and it was just responding to the sensor wiggling around. Even a light strap around it made no difference, I am sure if I used this stuff in Summer it would melt and drip out!

So I have gone back to the standard 2 pads and metal plate and its an improvement...

My thin lead sheet sandwich with futaba gyro pads worked a treat..tail as solid as ever. But while I was trimming mechanically in rate mode I found the ball links too easy to unclip.. so just some trimming hovers rather than risk flying the beast. I'm sure i have new links in the box..an easy job for a change but I'd prefer captive links..

It looks like he's back to being a good boy again.

If anyone in the Uk wants a Predator then this is your chance.. I've got too many helis and he's one that is going to have to go...

Bins of spare parts and a chaotic heli-room! Anyway got a new one coming

Also going to sell my 12S600 - running 620 blades it's a rocket that I'll never fly to it's potential. Climb rate is insane when you turn the wick up...

Good to hear you got it fixed - I hear you about the heli collection growing but you might just consider shelving the Predator for a little while before selling it. They don't bring anywhere the money we paid for them and you might get the itch for a gas burner later. I picked up a T700 last summer and really enjoy flying it but then again 30% nitro fuel is less than $25/gal. out the door locally here, 15% nitro ~$15/gal.

I'm just getting my Predator going again and enjoying it. My only issue is the high speed lean. haven't looked at it in a week because of weather and a new job. gray cloudy 40ºF and wind just not fun for me. Weather guessers say it'll be better by the end of the week so I'll get some flying in. with daylight saving in effect I should have some sunlight to fly in after work.

I've got the spectra as well, remember? But reality is that I'm a crasher of helis - too impatient and get myself into trouble my piloting 'skills' can't get me out of - and with my history with gassers and the costs and difficulties of getting parts - and worse the aggravations of getting anything to fit on my predator or the aggravations of accessing bits on my Spectra (the wiring is so tight for access).. Well flying them just isn't relaxing for me.

As a simple example.. I dinged my 600N.. drove 20 miles to get the parts the same day, had the engine, clutch and main blocks out, bearings changed, clutch relined, re-assembled and a new tail and repaired TT on it in 24hrs and flying sweet. Even though I've had the gassers apart often enough the same job would take me upto 2 weeks to get bits and then 3 to 4 days of fiddling to fit it and another 1-2 weeks of phaffing sorting it out. I know other folk are slicker at fixing up their gassers but it has taken me as long as 2-3 evenings messing about before I'm happy it's all indicated right. I can get a painted stock canopy for a 700N for less than a plain one for a gasser.. and I can get a new canopy for my 600N for $11 ..OK not the highest quality but perfectly functional and visible in the air.. you can't see the imperfections from 20 feet.

This last year I've had less than 30 flights on the gassers between them sitting on the shelves while I think about their problems or wait for bits. I probably do 20-30 flights a week total on my other helis (I said I was slow to learn)...and i probably crash a heli every 2-3 weeks trying to get stuff right.

Even changing the tail push rod links was a pain last night. Century grey links were so soft that they deformed putting them on and now I've got to replace the balls and links and recut the rod etc Indeed i may well just sleeve a 700 pushrod and use their links rather than mess about making up a new rod with rocket links/balls..Century black links are brittle.

Maybe your tail woes where caused by the same spacer assembly issue?

Thanks for the heads up.. but had read it and my problems were not due to the tail rotor assembly.. heli has flown fine in the past. The current issues are virtually resolved by changing the zeal mounting to futaba pads sandwiching a thin lead attenuation plate.. and now I've identified and fixed dodgy ball links on the tail pushrod there may have been a tiny bit of slop associated.

I plan to give him a better test flight tomorrow and assuming everything is resolved then I'll advertise him for sale UK. I wouldn't sell him unless he's A1 (or scrap)

I've got a beautiful bespoke canopy I bought a year ago that can go with him.. never even had the screen fitted..yellow and red fade with purple flames - since he damaged my paint job on his wanderlust
