I've got a chance to pick one up that's in great shape. Can anyone tell me about any pros or cons (other then parts are hard to find)?

well. I have about seven of them...a whole lot of fun to fly! Apart from the original Kalt plastic links being very bad, it is a solid machine. And the clamps for the tail rotor gear box have broke a couple of times due to material fatique... The helicopter generally needs a little more frequent look-overs than todays machines...
And of course the canopy...Kalt was always great helicopters but the thin ABS plastic canopies really suck! I've thought about making glassfiber canopies for some time but haven't got there yet. I have about 25 Kalts so I need a few...

Regards!

Thanks for the reply, sounds positive enough for me to go ahead and get it (like I needed a lot of pushing LOL). It comes with a unfinished canopy so maybe I will use it as a plug to make a FG one.

I had a Baron 28 with collective pitch as my first heli. I may be wrong, but I think there may have been a fixed-pitch version of it before my time, 1985 when I started. Like R-Moore74 says, the ball-links were bad, made of very hard plastic. The tailboom was a carbon- fiber tube that you had to cut and file to fit the T/R gearbox. The rotor head had plates for the feathering spindles to be mounted onto. They flexed and blade track was okay. The T/R gears were easy to strip.
I loved it. I learned to fly in the summer of 1986 and the temps were 120 degrees. The Webra.28 with a heliball muffler barely had enough power to lift off with the wood dowels and golf wiffle balls, into a hover more than 1 foot. I had to go into translational lift to get higher, but it would settle back into a low hover when I stopped.

Im restoring a Baron 20 right now....

Anybody remember if they had a Bell Hiller mixer upgrade?
(mine has one)

If I put a good 32 in it will it lift a scale fuse?

Yes ....I did read the post above....the new motors of today should provide more power..even slinging the old solid hardwood blades.

I had a Baron 20. The first mod I did was to fit the Bell-Hiller mixer. Turned it into a fun model to fly. With an OS28 I flew it with a H500E body made for a Shuttle. Flew well with floats too. I only got rid of it because it was too hard to get parts for.

Still flying......

If yours has the spring steel 'dampener', be aware that they are much more prone to a boom strike on a hard touchdown that a heli with a one-piece spindle. Mine flys very smooth. It could definitely benefit from a new engine...the webra .28 is quite tired.... but I only fly it occasionally so I'll leave it stock along with it's mechanical gyro and heli-ball muffler !

My first collective pitch helicopter! Main thing I didn't like was the belt start, so I converted it to a top cone start way back when. It was very stable compared to my Cricket. I would think biggest problem now would be to get parts for it.

I have two Baron 20's, one seems complete with motor and no servos and one is almost complete.

Is there a market for these? I have never used them.

What would be a fair price on these...

thanks

My first heli was a Baron 30 MX. I learned a lot from it. The only problem I ever had with it was the Clutch Springs. I kept breaking them. I replaced the original spring type clutch with a one-piece clutch from Vortex R/C helicopters in California (now long since gone)...

Anyone know if there is a one piece clutch that will fit? I would want it for my new in the box Baron 30 MX.

Me..Thinks someone has figured
out an electric conversion for the Baron....as there are few folks(way too many) snapping them up here on RR...

It would would make.... a great E-heli.

I wish them well....

They had different upgrade parts year after year...almost all parts are interchangeable.

oldslowrotor,

I think an OS .32SX or .37 would fly ity quite well. I didn't post that I was flying when it was typically 110 degrees F when I qowned the Baron 20. Helis were new then and I would fly in any weather because I was hooked.

I had the "spring damper" and had many boom strikes.

Anybody remember if they had a Bell Hiller mixer upgrade?
I added the Bell-Hiller mixer to mine back in 1984. I even flew it inverted with a Century VII radio using "the switch"

It took forever to do 1/2 roll even with the mixers, but that thing was so stable, you could do no wrong, right side up or upside down.

Not the 1st heli I flew inverted in those years.
