I see most people with Trex 700 and 400kv motors run 18,19 or 20 tooth pinions on stock main gear. I'm Using a 520kv motor with a 115 tooth main gear and 12 tooth pinion. I've stripped 2 main gears In 10 flights it's only doing it with my 30c zippys if I punch it hard. With the 25c hyperions I don't have this problem. What Im trying to find out is what's the largest pinion I can put on here with a 164 main gear and if it will make my esc work harder by changing to a 164 tooth main gear.

One of the real advantages of e-power is that with data logging you don't have to guess -- the data gives you factual information about the performance of your setup on every flight.

Do yourself a favor and, if you don't already have one, get a Castle ICE 80 or other ESC with data logging and use it. The data doesn't lie.

I have a ice 80hv but I'm waiting for my castle link. I don't want to change my setup only to find out it was better before if someone can answer the question for me.

increasing the ratio of the driven gear will give the driving gear more mechanical advantage so it does less work to turn it. The driving gear will, however, have to turn faster to get the same speed out of the larger driven gear.

motor wont work as hard, but it will need to spin faster. theoretically that should make your ESC work less hard (more throttle you give the more, the less the ESC has to soak up and burn off), unless it means drawing more amps than your ESC can take.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure switching up to a larger main (or a smaller pinion) will reduce load on the motor. Less load = less amp draw. Sounds to me like you're on the right track.

If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

I hope switching to a larger main gear will get the job done
