Before flying circles, first of all try to fly backward stright. From left to right, from right to left, etc. This helped me.

That's how I started. Just slowly fly backwards from one end of the field to the other. Then stop, turn and repeat. Alternate which direction you turn between coming around tail-in or nose-in.

Next I started getting the feel of turning as follows:

Start flying backwards straight across the field and when you to the end of the field, instead of stopping, use the rudder to slowly turn the heli tail-in. Continue backward and rudder movement until the tail is pointed back toward the other end of the field. Then fly backward to the other end of the field, and do the same thing turning the other direction. While in a corner, lead with the tail. You won't be going fast enough to need much of any aileron. Before you know, you're doing a figure 8.

It might sound funny but after getting comfortable on the sim and not crashing anymore on the sim, I did some figure 8 circuits with the coaxial Lama. With the lama if you go the wrong direction in cyclic, it will be noticable, but it won't crash.
Then I flew the inexpensive HBK2 first doing straights and circles over tall weeks, the to the 450, then the e550.
Because tail gyro performance is more important with backwards flight the faster you go, I found my HBK2 tail could not keep up unless I was going slow. Eventually I had to upgrade my 450 tail servo and gyro to get going faster.

all good advice so far.I am working on backwards flying now,I started last season and i am trying to perfect it more this season.one thing to do on the sim is besides learning how to fly backwards, pay attention to correcting backwards,if you understand what I am saying.learn how to bail out and how to counteract bad moves,so you will be prepared when you try it on the real thing.

I just approached backwards like everything else I have done so far, start SLOW and SMALL and go from there.

backwards flying brings up another important aspect that I always tell new guys learning...HOVER ORIENTATIONS...it seems it always comes back to heli 101,the hovers.if you can stop the heli and regain control from ANY position, this takes 99% of the risk factor out,as you can just stop the heli and get control back from anywhere, and keep going,it really will reduce your risk of crashing if you have your hovers down pat.

now a lot of people are thinking "duh learn your hovers first, common sense" but you would be surprised how many guys learn tail in hovering, some half assed side in,and then go right to some aerobatics.you can always tell by the FF "S" patterns where the guy learned tail in,started FF but cant quite turn the heli more than 45 deg,so you see these big "s" patters all over the sky

Bob,

You can upload files to your gallery. Not all file types are supported and not that if you uploading the file directly from your SIM, only users with the same SIM will be able replay them.

What sim do you have?

Here's more information.

PS: Free uploads on Mondays.
