I noticed that a significant amount of folks do not complete the Birthday, Occupation and Interests fields on the Profile page. For those of you that did not complete these fields I am curious as to why not? Conversely, for those of you that did complete these fields I am curious as to why?

I have completed these fields and I guess it is for the sake of transparency. I feel this information serves multiple purposes; it helps the reader get a little better feel for the person behind the post, and it helps people to form common bonds. And I must confess, what prompted this post is the fact that I always check a person’s profile when I read a post that is of interest to me.

Lots of people feel that how old they are is basically none of your business. Others want to be thought younger, and still others want to be thought older. Then, there is the security thing...one of the most important pieces of information in stealing a person's identity is their birth date.

The government cannot give you anything without first taking it from someone else.

Steve,

All good points, but as to security, my guess is that it would be fairly easy to get ahold of someone's birthdate even if they did not post it in their profile. And as to appearing older or younger, some days I feel like I am 25 again and other days I'm pushing 85.

Are you referring to the topic of the post? Before I posted I did a search on this to see whether or not it had been discussed. Based on your comments I searched again and do not see where it has been discussed many, many times. Sorry if I offended you.

Its not very hard to get somebodys full name and location off of here, that on top of the power of google and you can find out what they ate for breakfast that morning, and dinner the night before.

whats your full name and adress? Thats basically how easy it is..But it wouldnt work right now since you know what im up to..If you didnt know this then I could shoot you a PM saying you just won a free gyro, just need your name and addy and I will send it.

See what im saying? I wouldnt do that, I have my own name But thats how simple it is..And alot of people on here put their full name, addys, and phone numbers right here on the open forum.

If I was up to searching all of your posts and spending an hour on google I would tell you your birth date without you even telling me the above info. Theres also "PI" websites..Like 15 bucks and it'll give somebody all the info on somebody else you would ever need...Belive me just because you dont have your B-day listed here doesnt mean its not somewhere on the web, if somebody really wants it they can find it.

Choicepoint (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChoicePoint)

Out of curiosity I contacted ChoicePoint (http://atxp.choicepoint.com/default.htm) and was informed that if you can prove you are a business owner their services are available to you. The actual product is called AutoTrackXP.

I also did a Google search and came up with a number of hits for companies that advertise they can obtain personal information. Now whether or not these companies can and do provide personal information to the "average Joe" is another topic all together.

The bottom line for some people, and I respect their decision, is to limit the amount of personal information provided on public sites.

I'm not going to find out because then I would have to come up with an excuse as to why I missed it, and more importantly, why I didn't buy you a present!

the point by the poster was that it could be done from here 'easily'.

my point is that it is not that easy unless a poster gives info like name and address. hell at that point then i might as well give you the birthdate. so starting with just a user name on a forum only it is not 'that easy'. that was my point.

it ain't happening from a user name and profile.

"Its not very hard to get somebodys full name and location off of here, that on top of the power of google and you can find out what they ate for breakfast that morning, and dinner the night before."

not happening from info contained in an rr profile.

Depends on what your definition of "easy" is..I personally call a few bucks and a few minutes of work easy..Or the "hard" way and search for all of it manually, which still isnt hard, its just boring and slow.

Botom line, your not safe on the web. Period. if you've signed up for most any website the info is on the web, if youve said something just once, anywhere, its on the web. If you've talked to any reporter or been in any newspaper article, its on the web. If you said a few things you shouldnt have (personal things) on video of something interesting...Its on the web. *If you've ever used a debit card/credit card or gotten a loan, or bought a car, or got a lisence of any kind its on the web..somewhere. (although getting that particular information would be hard, but not impossible)*

I dont see the point of not putting your B-day here on RR, however I dont see the point of doing so..So really I could care less All ive been trying to say is if somebody really wanted to steal your identity or something along that lines its not the hardest thing to do, and same goes for everybody..

No, But some of the info from RR could be used to figure all of that out from an outside source.

monkey nutz,

You misinterpreted my post. I said, "...my guess is that it would be fairly easy to get ahold of someone's birthdate even if they did not post it in their profile". I did not state it could be done solely based on information provided on RunRyder. Secondly, I said that it was my "guess", which infers it is not a statement of fact that this information could be easily obtained.

you would not be able to find out my birthdate from any info contained on this forum. that was the only point i was trying to make.

sure, if I gave you more info. but my profile and the profile of many others on here won't get you there.

Is that a real RR member? If so then im not going to display his age publicly when he obviously didnt want to do so in his profile

And btw, the info somebody would use isnt on the profile, its on the forums and the info given/recieved durring a deal in the classifieds.
