Nimh? Really? Come on dude...there is NO, I repeat, NO reason to use Nimh cells in a heli. There is also NO, I repeat, NO reason to use Align electronics in a heli. There are too many better alternatives.

I'm not knocking Align...I have 4 of their helis (600N, 700N, 600E, 450pro) and really like 'em...but their electronics are an accident waiting to happen.

What hes saying is that most are using lipos these days.

And to be Fair the battery and reg are very important and dont skimp on these in a Heli.

Does it know that its hooked up to a NiMH battery or a Lipo? Or does it just take an input voltage and reduce it to a regulated output voltage?

Just curious....

its the same DC voltage and probably also a fully charged 6 volt nimh will be about 7.5 volts .

So it will probably just show low bat all the time but work ok.

Would use it in a cheap foam plane but thats it .

It looks i will have to leave out the nimh battery then ,and go with the alighn 3 in 1 ,the lipo battery , regulator etc,i was happy with nimh for years and liked the 6 v nimh eneloop cause has a low very low discharge rate

I just bought a pair of nimh batteries for my new Radikal In some projects they are just easier to use and not have to worry about regulating anything.

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

Only problem with not regulating stuff is alot of regs these days have fail safe on/off switches , you normally put all the load through the switch when you do the old set up.

Datidun , get atleast a 3000 mah lipo or above but bigger you go the heavier they get.

You could go with a Li-Ion battery and not have the dangers of the Li-Po. Fromeco sells them with all different types of plugs, including Deans.

I have three 2in1's one if which gas been in service for two years.
Several others used in our club. No issues at all.
I am not biased, as I also use Fromeco, reactors, Ely q.
They all work great. They all have failures too, that is just the nature of electronics, however so many Align units are sold that they are bound to have a worse record of failure.
Then there is the mentality that if someone has something else that was more expensive, they will bash the Align stuff.
And remember that only bad news gets reported.

Dont know why they running align down ,the so called DUDE in the beginning of the topic was running down align electrics including nimh batteries ,but he flyes align helis ,thats like buying a BMW and taking the motor out cause its crap ,weird ,i decided to stick with nimh batteries will put in a 3800 mah or so,as i cant find a regulator for 6 volt nimh anywhere ,at the end of the day i dont need a lipo to do 3 d flying and i can still use 9252 servos

What it was in the early days Align ESC's and Reg's were not reliable and were the cause of many crashes.
Im sure there electronic stuff is now alot better or we would all know.

Does it know that its hooked up to a NiMH battery or a Lipo?
Barracuda - no, it doesn't know it's hooked to NiMh, but he's got a 5- cell NiMh pack, whose nominal output voltage will be around 6 volts. Though the INITIAL off the charger voltage may be higher, that initial voltage rapidly disappears to the flatter part of the discharge curve.

The output of the Align 2 N 1 is 5.8 volts, and it's a linear regulator. Unless this regulator is a very low dropout one, it's only working with about 200 millivolts of input to output differential voltage, and may not even do any good as a regulator. There would be very little, if any, advantage to using this regulator with those batteries.

For crying out loud, there is nothing WRONG with using Nicad OR NiMh batteries in a helicopter. Nicads did the job well for decades, and they still continue to work well.

NiMh cells have also performed flawlessly for years in this application.

The 2 N 1 works quite well. I've got three, never a problem.

There is nothing magic about LiPos, and there is no reason to insist that the ONLY choice for flight packs is a LiPo. That is just a plain ignorant position to maintain.

Well said DKshema. I think its the equivalent of saying more Fords break down on the roads than Ferraris - true, but only as there are far more Fords out there. Align are the Fords of the helicopter world!

As people have said there is no point using the align 2 in 1 with a 6V NiMH.

+2 on what dsankey1/dkshema said,just get a Duralite 5.1V reg then you don't need a stepdown for anything .
