i'm quite happy with the scorpion 4035-500 on my 600mm 12S logo. Its actually a 700mm motor but it doesn't weigh much more than the 4025's and never seems to bog on 12S.

10s vs 12s
There isn't much benefit going 12s over 10s...

you need a 12s capable ESC obviously...

as for a motor...the 4035 is a great motor for either 10s or 12s ...

the 4035/560 is the best 10s motor..better than the Xera

but for 12s the xera 4030/3y (460kv i think) is GREAT! I use that one in my logo 700 and it is very powerful yet efficient.

I get 6+ minutes or so on 710's at 1950rpms

That's 12s 5000mah though

10s 4200mah is a good setup for 10s...in my opinion

of course I see no reason to go 12s on a logo 600 though ...unless spinning 690's/710's

if you flew a logo 600 with 620's and 10s you'd see it has more "POP" than you can imagine

I only get about 4 1/2 miuntes spinning 620's at 2300rpms with a 10s 4500mah setup ...

i get 5.5-6.0 (using about 70%) minutes with decent 3D on 12S 2650 at 2000 rpm, though i haven't pushed it hard yet, its still my baby as its my newest and largest. I'm guessing that number will b down to 4.5 to 5 minutes after i start trouncing it like my logo 400. I'll probably move to 3000 mah packs though to get close to 6 minutes again.

I agree with jag, even though i have gone 12S and there's no need to go there unless you are re-purposing some existing 425mm-550mm packs. thats why i went 12S. In that case its quite convenient and you have a very low current draw machine. I'm currently using a castle hv-45 with no problems doing decent 3D (fff, full stick tic-tocs, extended climbouts, etc) because of the light weight of my machine (7.7 pounds rtf with lipos) i only pull about 60 amps peaks, but thats still just shy of 3000 watts, yielding 389 w/lb. you can get a lot heavier with packs but then you also need more watts to move the weight. At the moment i really like the light feel of my logo. it seems like it can auto forever!!

well I think I"m going to end up making it a 600SE once the SE parts come out.... so I can a power plant strong enough for 690 blades...

I was thinking about a

12s TP 3850 45C packs

scorpion HK-4035-400 or 500

CC ice 80HV or Kontronic 80HV

623mm maniac blades for now and later on putting 690mm on it with SE parts...

I'm unsure how you guys decide which KV you want??

i got my motor/airframe second hand and the motor was in it, but here's how i choose motors. i basically backsolve from the headspeed i want (lets say 2200 rpm on you 623 blades)

start with the lowsest pinion available, for mod 1 gearing, i believe this is 11T.

Then take your headspeed * main gear teeth / pinion teeth
this gives you motor rpm. then divide by nominal voltage (44.4)
this gives you your motor kv if everything is 100% efficient.

so
2200*106/11/44.4 = 477kv

multiply this number by 1.15 to account for efficiency

477*1.15 = 548

so the minimum kv for 12S to yield 2200 on a 11T pinion would be 548

However, its nice to heave good gear engagement, so you might want to use 14 or 15T

so 2200*106/15/44.4=350
350*1.15 = 402

So basically you can use the kv found or somewhat higher and govern down a bit. I'd probably go another 5-10% higher in kv than what you calculate to let your speed control have some nice overhead for the govornor

you can also use mrmels on the ready heli website, but i kind of like this way as you solve for kv rather than for headspeed.

I'm running the 4035-500 on 12s 40c 4000mah packs that weigh in at 1400 grams.
With a 12 tooth I'm seeing 2250 rpm at 75% on the jive. 620mm sab blades.
A hard 3d flight is only pulling 2200 to 2500 mah out in five minutes.

If I could do it over, I'd go with the thunder power 3800mah cells as well. They're only 1200 grams for 12s.
Your setup looks great, but definitally go with the jive 80 hv over the castle. With the jive you get a bec that works, the best governer, plug and play simplicity, and most important of all, reliability.

And why go with 12s ?
Well, the main reason folks didn't go any higher than 10s before was the jazz's 10s limitation. And the fact that 12s chargers weren't really common or cheap.
With the new "shipping" limitation on series cell count, and all these newer split wired packs, alot of folks are paralell charging anyways.

If you're having to in essence run two 5s packs, and deal with the paralell charging, you might as well go with two 6s and pick up any of the effeciency gains associated with a little higher voltage.
No doubt, 10s works just as well, but the question should be: why not go with 12s ?

Regards,
Nathan

if you go xera, go 4030, they are NOT same sized as Scorpion (Scorp 4035 = Xera 4030)

I'm trying to figure out how a person would decide which is better a 400 or 500kv motor.... you can get the same head speed by changing the pinion but how would that effect the power and efficiency.

scorpion 4035-400 15t pinion 80% gov 2305hs

scorpion 4035-500 12t pinion 80% gov 2305hs

I realize the 15T will have a stronger mesh with the main gear but that is really the only advantage I know of with the 400kv motor....

I don't know anything about it but Won't the motor speed have to be faster on the 15t pinion to get the same head speed as the 12t pinion

If you have to bend over more than once to pickup your Heli it was a bad landing
