Still new to the world of Hirobo and I have a question of opinions / options.

The stock SDX tail fin sucks. It fits the stock canopy, but will not match anything else. The new Canomod canopy required a replacement tail fin. I told my buddy Mike (Mike's RC Hobbies) to order me a CF one before I checked the price of the damn thing. 40+ DOLLARS later.... I told him to order it and didn't want to change my mind and stick him with it, so I bought it.

Suffice it to say, I am not all that impressed with it. Relatively thin and flexible CF that matches the stock shape, but the price.... It looks good, but I am afraid of the inevitable.

So, that said: What are others using? Are there aftermarket fins available? Other heli's fins that fit and match the style? I guess this applies to the Sceadu as well if there are other options for that. I have seen some with the holes cut out of the stock fin that were painted and I'm thinking of doing the same, but trying to dye it.

Please post your alternatives with pics if possible.

Thanks,
-Drew

I feel your pain Drew. I ordered a horizontal fin for my Turbulence and it was $50... Now it is beautiful and light and all, but the sticker shock got me.

The currency exchange rate is just killer when it comes to what it does to prices of Japanese goods. Parts are a good 20% more than they would have been several years ago on a straight currency exchange basis.

I had no idea there CF part were that expensive.

I have been thinking about making some from 2mm CF.
I have a CNC, just need a full size vector drawing of the part.
I do have that for my SDX tail fins.
Haven't bought any CF yet.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

These are the CF tail and boom fins I'm using. $30 for the pair. They've held up good so far, even with the tail fin taking a hit with the SDX's low landing gear. I think they look much better than the stock offerings, too.

in the old days, Jeff Green would relate a story whereas Hirobo was purchasing their CF from a US source, shipping it to Japan for cutting and then shipping finished product back. A really expensive way of doing things.

Don't know if they still do that now that CF is much more popular but they have always been *very* pricey for CF parts and frankly, for fins and even frame parts, you can do just as well elsewhere

Carbon Fin Options
If your looking for Cheap Carbon Fin Options for the SDX I used the Align 600 fin set. Paid $20 for both and you can get them anywhere. Horizontal fits perfect with just some small spacers underneath to keep it from hitting the tube brace. Also slightly longer bolts might be needed but I think the stock ones will work.
The Veritcal fits with small modification. Just take the stock fin and put the bolt thru the bottom hole and lay the carbon fin ontop. Then useing the stock fin as a drill guide re-drill the top hole directly below the orginal hole in the Align fin. Then use a 1/4" bit to drill the alignment hole in the carbon fin just like the hirobo fin. Use the hirobo fin as a drill guide for this hole too. Put the screws in on the carbon fin side and use the nuts on the back side now instead of how the Stock set up was bolts in from back and nuts on the fin side.
Here are some pictures.
