I am going to get a 450 size electric Helicopter and am looking for a simple and reliable radio for it. I have found a Hitec Optic 6 Sport it is only FM but I am pretty isolated and not too worried. I am wondering if this model is good enough to start out in electrics, don't know much about what features to look for, it seems simple to program and that is what I am looking for, any advice appreciated!

My recommendation is to get a Spektrum DX7. 7 channels, great if you go to a more complex aircraft or if you switch to airplane, for like retractable landing gear ... Etc. Plus it have 20 aircraft memory that you can control with the same TX. With LCD display. Plus it have DSM2 technology. Go to their website and learn more.

No matter what brand you get, make sure it has atleast 7 channels. If you continue to fly heli's you will eventually need a 7 channel.

So long and thanks for all the fish!

If your stuck on Hitec they offer the Optic in DSS2 2.4 I was looking at them on Tower Hobbies before I got my DX6i. Otherwise you can find a very reasonably priced DX6i or DX7 Transmitter batt. and charger only anywhere from $110 (slightly used DX6i) to $190 (new DX7) over on rc groups. There have been some pretty good deals here lately too. Seeing as how FM or 2.4 isn't an issue you can get a Hitec Eclipse reasonable and it's not a bad radio I had one for my planes before changing to 2.4 and never had an issue with radio failure.

Hitecs are great radios and cheap for all the features. They've never let me down. The 2.4 gHZ addition makes them all that much better.

Well I took some of your advice, bought a radio with 8 channels and got 2.4 technology. I found a great used RDS8000 TX/RX for a very good price, radio is being shipped this week, very excited about it. If you guys know of any good setup advice for this specific radio, shoot me a link! Now to find a good deal on some servo's and a charger for my 400 sized heli!
