Hello,

I am building a new bird, first electric (I flew nitro in the past). I see people on youtube flying with 8s, 10s, 12s, and 14s A123 batteries. The 8s packs are 19.8 volts, don't know what the rest are. How do these compair to 6s 22. volt lipo batteries? What type of battery is an A123? Lithium Ion, Lipo or am I not even in the ballpark? Not sure what to purchase.

Never seen A123 so can only speculate on what I've read. A123 is supposedly heavier and not quite as strong and have less flight duration than lipos. The benefit is being able to recharge at extremely high rates, some guys even hook up their pack straight to a 12V marine battery to charge!. The new lipo's however are able to charge at 2-5C which makes turnaround almost as fast as the A123's but you can explode lipos My recommendation is go lipo, they're cheaper, run longer per flight and can almost recharge as fast A123's if you have enough watts (powersupply and charger) to charge em fast.

heavier yes & nope a reg lipo has 120 cicle and the A123 has a 1000 cicle more to used and the 600 my recom is to run it 10 cell and with a scorpion 600 < > if is lipo 12t,and for A123 a 12cell would do fine A123 run it between 14t,15t checking the rpm and a scorpion 740kv.but with the aling stock mptpr they only run max 6cell bat if you whant more rpm go for a high pinion monitoring the rpm.

and the charge can be turnegy from HK or cellpro 10c they charge in minuts my 3 cell go for charging time 17min and the 6 cell gos for 22 min thats on A123 both of them.

Is there any sign of A123 closing the gap on LiPo? Never had a problem with LiPo but the A123 are obviously safer - just a bit behind LiPo technology.

IMHO, I think A123 is fine for the radio gear but the end of their discharge curves are steep. In other words when they dump, they dump right friggnin' now! I run a 6s pack on my T500 and it flies ok, for a pig. You can feel the weight and the power is really not there as opposed to lipos. HeliBob is right, I have Turnigy lipos that can charge at 2c and I can do a 5s 5,000 pack in about 22 to 23 minutes, not bad at all. If you only fly simple circuits then its fine. 3D will leave you wanting. Stick with lipos.

TT

I don't do 3D....no wait. Oh thats right, I can't do 3D!

I had a Trex 600 on 12s A123 packs and it flew great.
I'm now using 12s A123 packs on my Logo 600. Same size machine and it flies very well with those packs.

I would not go back to Lipo after using the A123. Quick charge, safe and years of use from each pack.

I use Lipo in my small planks but stick to A123 in the big helis.

The steep discharge is no problem. You can run the packs completely dry without any risk to the pack.
When the head speed starts to drop, it's time to land.

Rob,

Where are you getting your packs from and with which motor and pinion were you having success in the Trex 600?
