Someone asked me how to do this so I made a video.

Although I typically may use my eagletre logger, I do this when I'm lazy. It gets me an idea of true RPM before doing any tweeking of throttle curves or to just confirm my motor calc entries were correct when running a new motor and/or pinion.

Nice video. That's a lot safer than the way I've been doing it.

Couple of people I fly with have been using a tachometer program from their I-phone. It checks out accurate against a skytach optical tach and is pretty simple to use as well.

You can also tach the tail rotor with a airplane tach, and then divide it by the gearing. The tail method is good for multiblade helis.

I am one who hates to barrow but over the years I have barrowed everyone elses Skytach. Personally I think the Skytach is a ripoff, it chops your eyelashes if you hold it too close to your eye, you have to take the batteries out of it after you use it otherwise it drains them and it just feels cheap. I finally broke down and got a Batam Helimaster II. Its $20 more then the skytach and well worth it, it feels solid and does alot more than just measure Heli blade RPM. Kick in that it comes with a built in rechargable battery makes it all the better.
