Why clockwise rotation ?
I wonder why is it that our models have a clockwise rotation while the real thing is counterclockwise.

Wouldn't that have solved a lot of scale problems people run into ?

Also I don't think it would change anything for us ?

Just wondering...

IIRC U.S. helicopters go clockwise. Maybe a U.S. govt. Conspiracy, get it ingrained early to buy Bell or Sikorsky. .. Heli-itis sufferer.

Maybe cuz they are made on the other side of the world and things are just backwards over there.

There's lots of variation in rotor direction in full-size. Most all of RC rotates clockwise because our engines rotate counter-clockwise and are connected by a single pair of gears. Some older RC birds did use belt drives though.

Because we use gyros in RC, head direction matters not -- but switching from CW to CCW with full-size birds will sure get your attention.

Couldn't the engines work the other way around ? We have engines occasionally start backwards...?

Just thinking out loud here, that's all.

They have to counter rotate, otherwise, they would not be able to fly.

our motors are designed to run counterclockwise. when you put on a pinion to a main gear, then the blades spin opposite.

you CAN run a 2-stroke engine backwards, but you need different timing on the ports for it to develop the same power.

i have a henseleit 3DNT that has a belt-driven main gear. in this case the motor runs the same direction as the blades. so, to have clockwise spinning blades i must have a backward running motor (which i do). if i put in a 'normal' direction motor then the blades spin counterclockwise. but, then i'd need a fan with blades facing the other direction, and i'd have to swap the tail blades to the other side of the boom.
if it ain't broke, break it.

A full size heli pilot told me once that it makes no real difference to the way a heli flies which direction the blades rotate. I would imagine you'd have to hold right pedal vs. left pedal when you give up collective, but I have never flown a full sized heli so I just don't know.Avant RC

True when in forward flight, but transitions to and from hover take a few approaches before the tail 'adjustment' smooths out -- for me anyway.

Exactly. I've got a few hours in R22's which are CCW, and two landings in a Eurocopter AS350 which is CW. You adjust, but it's queasy the first time.

Id be willing to bet, a counterclockwise rotor would also feel strange in an rc bird to one whos has always flown clockwise. You don't realize how often you give gentle right cyclic until you see a newbie trying to keep it from drifting left their whole hoverChris

Thats exactly right swoop!

I reversed my logo to match the rotation of a full scale Cobra and it leaning the other way messed with me for a few flights.

I psyched myself out pretty bad when I flew a LH rotation bird for the first time. It went fine and I don't recall thinking it was a big deal after the fact. Certainly now it makes no difference.

Quite a few full size machines are LH rotation and yet many are RH. I've asked folks over the years why that is and no one has ever been able to give me a definitive answer.

Years ago I would go back and forth between a Bell Jetranger and a Astar and it was really not a big deal, just keep the nose straight. I would switch throughout the day.

With models it's really a non issue with HH gyros.

I don't know if there are any theories as to why one would be better than the other.

I was in a full scale heli flight school and asked the instructor the very same ? and he told me that its kinda like say ford or chevy vs. toyota or honda, in that, helis made in america turn counterclock wise and european helis go clock wise. He also said neither has any advantage over the other, just turn the other way.Keep ur head out the dirt only in the grass

To me, it is no different than if you go to england, you drive on the right side and in the States, you are on the left side.

The real reason why real helicopters rotate counter clock wise is because the pilot in command seat is on the right side so if you lose tail rotor the heli will start rotating clock wise so you will be able to see out of the window.
That’s what designer’s hade in mind, Some manufactures follow this rule some don’t.
