Clutch bell, etc. assembing question
My friend and I are assembling a velocity 50. On page 8 of the manual, assembly 4, installation of the starter shaft, clutch bell, clutch bearing and hex starter adapter, we are having a side to side (not up and down) play after the entire unit was installed in the frame. It appears that the side to side play comes from the pinion that was pre-installed into the clutch bell being just a bit smaller than the inside diameter of the 10x19x5 bearing. Is this normal?

Did you locktite the pinion gear to the bearing? If not use green bearing retaining locktite and clean the surfaces with alcohol first

Not yet. Also, the bearing feels "loose." I'm going to run down to the LHS and get new bearing to see if the new bearing helps to fix this problem. I think this may cause vibration later so I need to fix the problem now.

Btw, I placed the pinion/clutch bell on to the Du Bro balancer and it's very well balanced.

That play disappears when the engine is installed. I agree with putting sleeve retainer (green) on the inner bearing/pinion mating.Flying $uck$...All of the money out of my bank account!

I wouldnt worry about a little play in that bearing. Every heli I have worked with has a little play. Just locktite the pinion gear to the bearing and run it. Like Kazager said, the play will disapear when the engine is installed.

an old trick is to NOT use green sleeve retainer compound but unintuitively, molyB grease instead. The thinking is that the pinion turns so fast that it essentially solidifies the grease at the point of contact yet remains flexible.
