Tailblades results in lots of shaking...
Hi

I am trying to get my V-Bar working in a Joker II. On the trim flight the heli was _far_ from stable. Especially the tail was wagging like hell!

I guess that shakes of the sensor is the cause. So I removed the main blades and spooled up the heli on the bench. And yes, the helicopter was shaking like hell.

Then I removed the tail blades and spooled up the heli once again. Now the heli was stable like a rock!

It therefore seems to me that the tail blades were out of balance. To test this I tried another pair of tail blades, but with exact same result as with the first pair of tail blades.

Any clue what is wrong?

:-) Thomas

could you post images of your tail? it may give some clue to the issue.

Don't have a Joker
So it is just MHO, but it would seem that it is the tail spindle, or bolt(s) and or the tail mounts that are either bent or have come out of alignment. If a bearing is failing you would see this issue. The smooth run without tail blades eliminates the drive system. Changing blades eliminates the blades and so points to the spindle, bolts or bearings.

@Lejon - I have started by ordering a new tail rotor shaft and all bearings and other stuff on it. If this not works I will try the spindle and those bearings connected to it.

It´s possible you are getting vibrations from the tail belt when it´s running under the tail blades load (under load conditions it could suffer some friction points as it´s twisted inside). I would test it removing the blade holders and pressing the tail shaft with you fingers to simulate some load on it. This way you will not only see if there is any vibration but feel it. If you notice it, you will have to play a little with the tail position to reduce the belt twist inside and/or increase/decrease belt tension.

I had a probably similar case some years ago, where the vibrations where so hard that the carbon boom broke behind the elevator holder.
The reason was simply a wrong side mounted thrust bearing in the tailrotor. So check that the thrust bearing shim with the bigger inner diameter is inside on both grips.

Must look for an old video ... but needs time ...

if this is how your tail slider is;

could the shafts in the tail slider that attach to the ball links be too tight?

Installed new tail rotor shaft, new bearings and new cogwheel. The old bearings seemed a bit 'sandy'! This made at least some (if not most) of the shakings disappear

Also installed a small metal plate under the V-Bar sensor.

Did a new trim flight and it was far from as scary as my first try, but not stable as a rock either. Next step is to do a real trim flight and let the VBar software analyse it.

Hoping I am on the right track.

On the right track. Have now done a real trim flight and now the heli flies very smooth in easy flying. The tail wags a little bit, will try to lower the tail gain before next flight (from 70 to 65).

Pictures of my setup included.
