Lambert Kolibri Nano-Turbine
Do you think any company would ever make a gearbox for this turbine?
It would be killer to have that in a heli.

Those are nice, and pricey. Arent they like over 3000$?

Im not sure what, or if it could be geared as it spins close to 300k I think, but im no turbine expert, and agree that would be a nice little project.

Yea they are pricey,$3200.I'm sure it could be geared properly.I think Max. rpm is 243,000,not sure if you would have to run it at max though.Jamie Griffith

I think he has plans to do so but anything Martin does takes forever so don't hold your breath! He's just introduced a 5mm larger engine that has 5.5lb thrust which will be also suited to a two stage very well.

Got any specs on that sweet puppy? HP? Thrust? Total weight?
He's just introduced a 5mm larger engine that has 5.5lb thrust
So the one above must push around 4.5 ~ 5 lbs?

Here's some more info and one in a plank:

"This BobCat 25 is powered by a Lambert Kolibri Nano-Turbine. The Turbine puts out three pounds of thrust and weights about 7 ounces. The total weight of the plane is ~4.5 pounds"

That youtube link buzzsaw posted is my Sprite Nano turbine.Unfortunatly the vid was only taken on a cheap camera hence the poor quality. The engine was designed by John Wright who is the 'W' in the MW54 engine the engine is not currently in production although I did manage to scrounge a pre production one. It's got 6.5 lb thrust a 240k rpm. Currently fitted in a plank and no plans to mate it to a second stage yet.

Cool little engines. You can put them in a heli. It's just that they aren't used for turning the rotors.

There is no gear box in a turbine heli, the exhaust of the turbine is used to spin a squirrel cage type fan and that is connected to the blades.

Might need to do a bit more studying on your subject matter...

There is a gearbox in all turbine helis, and for that matter most all helis.

Your right about the "2nd. stage" as the source of direct power to be used for the driving of the rotor system...

How would you propose that we reduce the high rpm of the engine/motor be reduced to the needed rpm of the rotor system without a gearbox or gear reduction of some sort??

With an engine that small, the gear box would end up weighing more than the engine. IF you kept the weight down, might work on a 50 like the radical but then carrying enough fuel to keep it in the air could be an issue. Just my thoughts...

Really now, just how do you suppose to get the rotors spinning? You probably should do some reading on turbines that are used for other purposes other than jets.

The fuel consumption is high but a little less than I guessed. A 10oz tank would provide a little over four and a half minutes of full power bliss.

Hi
you might mount one at the end of each blade
