Fromeco Relion dead, never been used, but 18 months old
I bought a 2 cell 2600 mAh Relion receiver battery about 1.5 years back, but it ended up on the shelf and wasn't tested until this weekend. It's been stored indoors.

Now I found that it is literally dead, and my Eagletree sensor showed that it dropped to 7V almost on the first flight under load (600N flying).

While my other Relion same size, 3 years old, which has been used semi-regularly, but with breaks up to 8 months, still works very well.

Is there any hope the unused dead Relion will come to life after a few discharge/charge cycles?

Karl.

You can try to revive it with a very low amp charge, then a few cycles, it may come back to life.

I've revived batteries before, you pretty much just have to try it and see how it goes.

I need to figure out some contraption to discharge safely and controlled, since I really don't want to fly with it, considering the voltage drops < 7V even at > 70% charge. So I probably have to consider it a loss. Kind of disappointing; I have had high-C LiPo-s for my 450 in storage longer, and not been so dead.

Karl,

Call Fromeco and get the info directly from them. Mike is a wealth of information. I've had these packs last a LONG time. I did have one that was going on it's third season and I was concerned. Basically what Mike told was, if it discharges and charges reasonably well then it's ok. I don't remember the exact numbers he said but I do remember I had a 4200 mah pack and was able to put 4000 mah back into it which was not perfect but it was good enough.

I have seen one pack that was new that had issues. It was on a Pantera that I was test flying for someone and the cyclics just went dead for about 1 or 2 seconds. I almost filled my pants before I regained control. We put a volt meter on it and when we squeezed the pack the voltage would return, release it and the voltage went away. It was a bad pack for sure.

In your case it may have been a storage charge issue. They don't do well when stored fully charged.

As suggested I would charge and discharge it a few times and see what happens. I would be inclined not to trust it.

Hi Jeff, I didn't even open the package so it was stored at the shipped charge. I checked before 1st charge and it was a little below 50%, what is generally recommended for storage. Fromeco has only a 90 day warranty, and further voiding the warranty, I also soldered on a balancing plug before use (my charger requires it, although Relions don't)..
EDIT: I sent an e-mail to Fromeco, since it's not urgent. Still fixing up my 3rd heli, the Knight 3D, which has been on the shelf for a while.

I received a reply from Kurt @ Fromeco, letting me know the battery was probably dead, but suggested discharging down to 3V per cell (under load), and see how much I could put back in.

I don't have a Triton charger that can discharge, but I soldered some solid wires to a 12V car tail light with two spirals. Using my Eagletree monitor in Live mode connected to a computer, I found that the two spirals were about 0.6A and 1.7A. For now, I am discharging at 1.7A and we shall see how much I can put back in afterwards.

Maybe it's just that LiIon drops so much more in Voltage during load than the LiPo I was used to on my Eagletree. But then certainly the battery warning on the Align 2-in-1 is also completely off for LiIon.

2nd flight Relion (notice how V goes down to 7V):

2nd flight LiPo (down to 7.5V):
