If anyone is looking for a NIB N9, I saw one at Hobby Hangar in Chantilly, VA. Their website lists it for $799. It has plastic grips, I think. They have some SE parts hanging on their wall too. There was a pair of SE main grips.

Sold mine. it was the best looking heli ever. but, very expensive, and the gears did not hold up worth beans.

I still admire its looks, but there are better machines for the common folk.

Like many people, I too was frustrated with certain aspects about the N9 such as gear meshing and other common ailments people were having problems with. Vince from Rich Mountain Hobbies told me once to stick with the model as it will reward you later and he was absolutely right. I just had to give it soem time before I learned the model. I've learned so much on this model and have enough confidence in it to really ask it to do some amazing things and it does them too. Any 90 helicopter is going to be expensive to fly and crash. The n9 isn't all by itself in this regard.

Well there are some good deals out there right now..never too late to jump back in.. Believe me i've been through more than my share of tail gears.. It was my own fault tho.. Long story but if you have a E version of this beast and you spool it up in normal mode with much neg pitch, touching the rudder with the heli below 0 pitch will cost ya a set of tail gears.. Don't ask me how i know.. Every other gear i've replaced was because of a crash..
just my 2 cents...

Keeping my fabulous N9!
Even if the Synergy was out of production, which is not anymore as you know with the new financing, I will keep mine.

Let's put it this way, all of us have more than one Heli so why give away/sell one of the best 90 Nitro helis?

Do you sell a Bugatti just because they don't make them anymore?

Anyway, like owning an exotic car you buy enough parts to keep the original model going. The Synergy has so few parts that most of them can be duplicated one way or another.

So most of the time you fly the blades off one of your flybarless 600N (VStabi) and when the starts are aligned properly you burn a gallon of CoolPower with your precious N9.

Like taking your Bugatti to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and just for the fun of it you rube paint with an Aston Martin at Laguna Seca on a sunny Sunday...

Cheers!

Hi guys

I really do like my N9, esp since the FBL conversion..... but the crown gear and tail gears have 'one more chance' each.....

I have a spare crown gear and a spare set of tail gears. If/when they break, the machine is out...... can't risk the rest of the heli equipment on these crappy gears.

Regards
Paul

PS: i feel much better now that my rant is over.....

pwood,

How are you setting your gear mesh?

I have been flying the N9 for several years and have only lost one set of tail gears. This was after not checking the mesh for to long and letting it get to loose.

I check both the tail and crown gear mesh after every flight. I also reset the mesh after about 5 to 6 gallons of fuel. I just re-meshed the tail gears on mine last night. There should be zero back lash when the gear mesh is set properly.

I use shims to make sure everything is nice and tight.

Your flybarless looks nice.

Hi thenewguy

I flew the heli for about 2 years with almost no issues. I lost the crown gear once.... only.

I had done zero maintenance for quite a long time and lost the tail, just after getting airborne. I was in a 3 foot hover when it started spinning around. I toppled over just as i put it down, resulting in some minor damage. My fault.

After the rebuild, all was good for about 10 flights.

I switched gyros, and had the gain set a little high. i wasn't getting any wag in any way, but stripped the tail on about flight 5 then the crown 2 flights later.

I reduced the gain by 3 points and all was good for about 20 flights.

I then did the FBL conversion. On flight 8 (or so) i got a little wag in FFF and took some teeth of the crown gear. Reduced the gain and replaced the crown gear and all has been well for about 5 flight.

I DO know how to setup the tail meshing, i just find this the worst heli i have ever had wrt the tail drive..... I am also NOT really a hard core 3D pilot...... Just a spirited sport pilot!!!!

I am not confident it will hold up.

Regards
Paul

Expressing my thoughts exactly there Chris.

I have been flying the N9 for about 3 years now and have yet (fingers crossed it wont happen) to break either a crown gear or tail gears. I do some pretty aggressive reversals on the tail and use a spartan 760 with the set up to be as kind as possible to the tail gear train without the tail response feeling soft, I like an aggressive feeling tail, nice and sharp. So far so good no broken gears, even after planting it tail first lawn dart style into the ground at over 100mph during a hurricane...gears still ok.

I used to fly a robbe cuatro and the crown gear popped on that during a little brief tap of the tail during auto practice, yet I have broken tail blades on the N9 doing the same practice without breaking any gears.

I too am particularly careful about my gear mesh and check it regularly. To be honest the N9 is such a simple machine that their is very little maintenance to do that this little task is not much to ask myself to do when I consider the benefits of doing so.

Now what I talk of here is only my own experience and do not wish to take anything away from others whom have experienced different, perhaps they did not mesh the gears properly? or perhaps their are quality control issues for certain batches of gears? I don't know, but what I do know is that I love my N9 and cant complain about it much, it looks after me when I look after it...or something like that ha ha

Best of luck to all,

Cy.
