Tired of using paypal as the "only" online payment system? Any ideas about this company?
https://www.gunpal.com/

I haven't signed up yet, but it looks cool and they are cheaper then paypal to use, have anyone of you used them yet?
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Why anyone would affiliate an otherwise general purpose payment system with guns is beyond me. You'd think they would not skew it to a specific audience so that they could have a larger market potential. Too weird.

The message seems to be that if you're into guns, then they're your payment system of choice. Although there doesn't seem to be anything in their policies limiting it to guns - just stuff about various incompatible uses (acceptable use), all of which seem reasonable. Other than the name and the affiliations, there's nothing there that screams guns.

Of course, the gun affiliation is the owner, Mr. Cannon's , role in the California Gun website listed; but why make that association to a payment system? He must be very passionate about guns, as he is willing to limit his market reach. You have to respect their commitment to their cause, I suppose.

Call it payments.com or similar, don't mention the affiliations with guns (but don't diasallow them either) and they would still serve their goals and open up their market at the same time.

I'm not in the apparent target market (not particularly fond of guns), so I'll pass.

I did some research on it and they seem to be on the up and up. Alot of good reviews on them when I googled it. May have to look into them!

I too found good things about them, particularly from gun enthusiasts who are their target audience. If you don't mind the gun affiliation, then give them a "shot".

I would also like to find another company to do transactions through and one that will help you with a bad transaction unlike paypal unless you are going through eBay.

I love guns but the name will be a little bit of a turn off to another audience I agree. Paypal has gotten a little big for their britches I feel. Ever since Ebay took them over.

Because paypal will NOT allow any payments through their site if it for the purchuse of guns or ammo. That is why they came up with this site as an alternative to paypal.

Yeah, I get that, but if they just didn't restrict guns (as Paypal does) and beat Paypal for price (as they seem to do), then they would still service the gun crowd but not turn off the non-gun crowd = more money. That's the part that seems like a missed opportunity/shortsighted.

I'm a member over at calguns as well, and the "gunpal.com" name was discussed quite a bit when Ben and the gang first started gunpal.

The main point of discussion was even if the service was worthwhile that individuals and businesses might be put off by the name. The name has meaning to the guys who started the service-- namely paypal/ebay frowns on any firearm related transaction and gunpal was started as a way to take some income away from a company who doesn't support their views (paypal) and support their cause at the same time.

Paypal is still used very frequently for firearm related transactions, but you just can't have any mention of it in any of the paypal transaction forms or in referring links otherwise they can and do lock down accounts.

I never thought I'd see the talking points from a thread over at calguns rehashed here on RunRyder.

I might go link this thread over on calguns and see where it goes... it's good to see some 3rd party interest and discussion about the service.

It's a great name to attract and cater to gun enthusiasts. If that's what calguns and the board members felt was the point, then the name is perfect.

I think the potential put off is more than just the name; it's also the gun affilliations throughout the site. The fact that there is a donation feature and NRA is promoted heavily just makes the site that much more political. Again, whatever turns your crank.

What's the link to the discussion on calguns?

Maybe the larger issue is payment alternatives to Paypal. That seems to be an issue of concern for RR members.

Maybe we need "HELIPAL"?

Here's the initial site launching thread:

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/...ighlight=gunpal

And here's a thread specifically discussing how the site name might deter some potential customers:

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/...ad.php?t=236193

"artherd" is Ben Canon so his posts carry a bit of weight in regards to gunpal's business direction.

As far as the donations, yes it is affiliated with the CGF (Calguns legal Foundation) which over the last couple of years has helped quite a few California residents with legal troubles regarding law enforcement not being fully aware of all the technicalities of certain configurations of firearms. For example, many departments now use the Calguns identification flowchart specifically in their department training. They're also pushing for more Second Amendment causes in general via specific legal action, filing briefs in pertinent cases, and advising certain municipalities that certain laws they wish to pass may take quite a bit of money to defend in court. So yes, there is an underlying agenda regarding the pro-Second Amendment stance -- but the name of the site doesn't try to hide that in any way.

Thanks for the link. At least they're transparent about it. I appreciate that as it lets me make a choice. Most of the posters in the linked thread seem to agree that hiding the affiliations would be a negative thing. I respect that.

That explains the why.

So it's very new too. Launched in October 2009.

Maybe we need "HELIPAL"?
I had to laugh at your suggestion for "HELIPAL"... because then we would get into the same situation with plankers not wanting to use the service because it's heli-related... much like non or anti-firearm people thinking twice about using gunpal!

While I agree with their cause my personal feeling is that the name chosen polarizes the end user... for better or worse. A non-offensive name would attract a much broader customer base. Speaking from the firearm-enthusiast side of the fence the reception to the site has been very positive amongst that particular community; users (individuals and businesses) like the reduced fee structures and the fact the profits are going to a company that supports their hobby and contributes to their cause... unlike paypal.

However, even if the site had a non-offensive "friendly" name the cause and back story when/if discovered could alienate users even more so because they could interpret it as a "hidden agenda." So in that regard I agree with Ben making the name direct and to the point and the motivations transparent. Yes, it will put some customers off but those that agree with the cause will be loyal users.

Naming the site had to be a tough business decision on Ben's end; balancing his passion and motivation in one hand and the potential lost customer base in the other hand because of that passion and polarizing issue which is a direct motivation for the site. Time will tell if his decision was the right one! I'm certainly on the "wishing him well" side of things.

Runryder should consider endorsing the use of Gunpal.com over Paypal.com as it would help to resolve a lot of the issues in the classifieds here. I like the fact that they destroy counterfeit items Rick

I noticed that they have now changed their name to GPal - good move. Reflects their broader application. Still some gun related updates/new bits, but that will probably evolve with time too.

The missing convenience is the link with ebay... that is if you are a frequent ebay user. The interface between ebay and paypal is very convenient.

I put a BB gun up on ebay. They removed it in short order. But not before I had side communication and made the sale... without ebay getting a dime
